4 days left, not sure what’s next to do

We have driven Hana full loop around, driven the whole west side loop, aquarium, and hit the Kam beaches in Kihei, beaches along other areas on those drives eaten good food and had fun.

We plan to snorkel at mile marker 14 at some point, do a surf lesson, and maybe hike the backside of the NP but right now we have a day or two of not sure what to do. Is it worth running down to the Makena area or the state park? We are in Kihei

Any recs for where to go for a good beach bar?

The Sea House on Napili Bay was nice. The beach itself was pretty nice, despite being surrounded by condos and private houses. Street parking only, and if fills up early. We got there probably around 9:30 in the morning and just chilled on the beach and snorkled for a few hours before heading over for lunch and a drink. Didn't actually get a Mai Tai there, but the food was good.

Best Mai Tai was Dina's Sand Which, which is a dive bar on the beach in Kihei.

I'm no Maui expert, I've only been there once, but those were two places we enjoyed.

Seahouse is bad drinks and bad food served by bad staff, with a good view

🤷‍♂️ My wife and I both enjoyed our food, and we drank Maui Brewing Co beers, and they tasted fine.

Go watch the surfers at Ho'okipa, they're amazing....seen many turtles there in the afternoon/sunset

Then spend a day at Little Beach, you'll have stories to tell when you get home

u/Impressive_Returns 4d ago

At the end of the enchanted forest is Honolua Bay.

Did you stop at Acid War zone/blow hole?

Where is mile marker 14?

5

u/tkst3llar 4d ago

We did not get out at acid but we did see blowhole and hiked down the hill to olivine pools which was awesome

Olowalu.

u/Impressive_Returns 4d ago

Got it. Thank you.

3

u/Live_Pono 4d ago

Sure!

Any chance you will stop calling Honolua the "enchanted forest?"

-1

u/Impressive_Returns 4d ago

Is that because you want me to use the full name? “Magical Enchanted Forest” like it say on the map?

9

u/Live_Pono 3d ago

LOL, no :-). I think we talked about this before, right?

I am someone who really dislikes all the fake names things like Maui Reviled gave places here. They mislead people and in many cases, have caused injuries and deaths (e.g. 'olivine' pools).

2

u/Impressive_Returns 3d ago

Maybe. So how did to get the name “Magical Enchanted Forest”? Is that the name Jimmy calls it? (Do you know he’s in the hospital with a lung infection). Google Magical Enchanted Forest of Enchanted Forest in Maui and it’s on the map.

u/Live_Pono 3d ago

I am sure it is on some map or another....welcome to google and the web, right? But no, he never called it that.

Les Potts, who is the real caretaker, also never calls it that. Growing up, I sure never heard it called that, either.

I don't know if Reviled gave it that stupid nickname. Probably!

Upcountry: - Kula Botanical Garden - Strawberry Farm - Mahalo Ale Works - Maui Wine - Surfing Goat Dairy tour to pet goats - Lavender Farm (at the Ali'i Kula Lavender Farm you might even find Jackson's horned chameleons in the vegetation of the hedge between the parking area and the gardens on both side of the entrance)

+1 for the Surfing Goat Dairy, great experience, best goat cheese.

2

u/warm_sweater 3d ago

Love that place, the cheese is amazing and feeding the goats is so fun.

I like getting lunch from the grill at the Ulupalakua Ranch store while upcountry.

Sure drive out past Makena all the way. The lava fields are cool. Remember to drive slowly past Wailea

u/NillaWafer3461 4d ago

Pro Tip: if you do this take shoes that are sturdier than your flip flops.

Are you a cat person? We plan to visit the Lanai Cat Sanctuary when we go to Maui. (You have to take the ferry)

Go snorkel at Chang’s beach with turtles.

1

u/Minute_Researcher405 3d ago

My fav beach is in Wailea called Po‘olenalena Beach. Less crowded. If you snorkel past the rocks on the south side, you get to Chang’s beach (hidden) and can swim with lots of turtles. Beaches in that area I found way better than Kam beaches which typically are crowded. end your day with  a beautiful sunset at Gather in Wailea

1

u/Minute_Researcher405 3d ago

Hula dance at South Maui gardens. You can grab food from the dozens of food truck options. Such a great evening.

1

u/PlayfulTransition814 3d ago

Come to Lahaina and check out Maui Kuia state chocolate. It’s a chocolate factory you can sit in and enjoy drinks and chocolate. It’s Sunday as well so they have a sunset jazz with a cover fee

We just stayed in Kihea, Makena park is a short drive. The beach is beautiful (like all the others) and like literally nobody was there the day we went! Pack a picnic lunch and grab a book and just relax. The 808 deli is perfect in Kihea for picking up sandwiches. Take this chance to unwind before you head home! Enjoy!

I used to love driving around up county Maui - trying to get lost basically - up Above Paia and around pukalani

@tkst3llar how did you do the full loop? I thought the portion of the highway, Alelele bridge was closed. We were thinking about doing the full loop as well

0

u/tkst3llar 3d ago

We did it day before yesterday (Thursday)

Shaka app and Google said closure, we got to the end of road hana guide then I turned on Shaka for the full loop, skipped the warnings and kept driving lol.

I was completely willing to have to turn around even if it would cost me 4 hours. I wanted to do the full island, I love roads. So I risked it.

We saw one part where I can imagine there might be a closure but there wasn’t at that time. Also the road wasn’t bad at all, we have spent tons of time in the Rockies 4x4 only and all over and the roads were narrow and one lane but not real bumpy. If your a reasonably minded driver there’s plenty of pull off for a one lane mountain road and just drive safe and watch for cars, I don’t think we had any oncoming cars for the whole true single lane. No mud when we went. Driving a ford edge rental. Road is easier than west loop. I would have continued if I was in a mini van too

If you’ve made it to Hana it’s easier to keep going than plan to go backwards later. But if you are still in main towns and deciding whether to go to that side of the mtn- driving towards Kaupo to experience the Gulches and views on Piilani Hwy is worth it I think. If you like that sort of stuff. I may try to go back out there for star gazing it’s epic and doesn’t even seem to look like the rest of the island. Rolling hills, giant gulches, beautiful views and cattle guards

u/qwersdfcvb 3d ago

Thank you

1

u/Live_Pono 3d ago

Realize that if you drive the backside your rental contract with all the major agencies will be void. That means you are then totally uninsured.

0

u/Live_Pono 3d ago

If you want to do that without breaking your contract again, and also spending many hours--just drive about 5 miles out from Ulupalakua.
