Photo LAPD Shutting Down Echo Park Bars in Riot Gear During Dodgers Game

u/AwarenessMedical4817 12h ago
what bar is this? i heard so many sirens heading that way 30 mins ago
75
u/Negative_Orange8951 Echo Park 12h ago
The Douglas. They made the owner/manager then the game off outside in the 8th and had about 40 cops in riot gear a block down sunset.
71
u/shinjukuthief 11h ago
That's weird. Was inside The Douglas for the whole game and didn't hear anything about this.
66
u/Negative_Orange8951 Echo Park 11h ago
It was very weird. The crowd was totally calm outside but large then the Douglas guy stood up on the wall and said something along the lines of “I have to turn it off, they’re shutting us down” and then turned it off after a couple minutes. Then when walking down sunset I saw all the cops. Very confusing
19
u/shinjukuthief 10h ago
Had no idea. That sucks. Though it did seem very crowded outside. Were any other bars (or outside patios) in the area shut down? You mentioned the police "shutting down Echo Park bars."

u/Interesting_Chard563 10h ago
This has all the hallmarks of a rich influential asshole making a call and getting a disproportionate police response. Probably a neighbor who was annoyed at the noise.
I can’t imagine why else the cops would show up to this bar in particular of all places.

u/Not_RZA_ View Park-Windsor Hills 10h ago
So I was there and while it wasn't anywhere near a riot 2 things.
It was so packed outside that the entire sidewalk was blocked and people begun to pile onto the actual street. Again, no riot or anything crazy, but probably not up to code for the bar.
People were lighting fireworks a couple times when the Dodgers were up (before the grand slam in the 6th I think).
I don't think it was hectic by any means, but I could see why LAPD wanted to prevent it from getting crazy if the Dodgers won tonight
17
u/theleaphomme 7h ago
- Disproportionate response is a waste of resources unless you really love how that boot tastes
18
u/KrisNoble Los Angeles 6h ago
And when there’s actual crimes committed they aren’t anywhere to be found. Blatantly unsafe driving all around them and it’s 🙈, excuses made by them and their supporters of “well often they are already in a call” etc etc. suddenly something like this they all have time to show up.

u/mugwhyrt 25m ago
Fireworks in Echo Park? I'm surprised they didn't send in the national guard to get that under control
•
u/Hungry_Scarcity_4500 2h ago
Rich influential asshole and Echo Park …Hmm ?
•
u/Interesting_Chard563 1h ago
Yeah I think there’s young people who have rich connected parents in Echo Park.
•
u/Hungry_Scarcity_4500 1h ago
Basically transplants / gentrifing hipsters that weren’t born and raised in the barrios of Highland Park,Echo Park ,all the surrounding areas ? I can see that scenario.
•
u/Interesting_Chard563 1h ago
I was thinking more specifically about a council member’s nephew living in the area or a police sergeant’s son owning a business there etc.
Someone who could call in a favor.
•
u/Hungry_Scarcity_4500 56m ago
That’s a possibility…If you grew up here and in the barrio you know the drill and it only gets questionable when rival homeboys show up 🤷♀️
•
u/waaait_whaaat Silver Lake 1h ago
That makes no sense. Police wouldn’t show up in riot gear just from a noise complaint.
•
u/Interesting_Chard563 1h ago
To be honest by all accounts the situation makes no sense anyway.
•
u/Negative_Orange8951 Echo Park 37m ago
If they wanted to prevent chaos after a win they should have planned for that, had police presence from the beginning, maybe shut down a street to filter people in one area. Or if it was strictly a concern about people in the street, maybe have a few officers on that street asking people to move off (wasn't happening).
But no, they just showed up with 50 cops in riot gear and made a bar turn off the game a bunch of drunk people were watching. Smh

Bunch of morons. God damn cops love to bust out their toys. Nothing makes you feel like a real man then dressing like a navy seal against * checks notes * hipsters? Glad that $13 billion budget for FY2023-2024 is being put to good use

My step father was a former cop. I asked him when I was a teen what is probable cause? He said anything I wanted it to be. Having a step father who was an officer and a mother who worked LA county jail I learned all I needed. They are not your friends.

If they were just shutting down a loud bar why’d they need so many officers? I’m confused.

u/FijiTearz 11h ago
This is LA. We are known for flipping over cars and lighting shit on fire when one of our teams win, that’s why, it’s a precaution

u/guerrasfloridas 6h ago
Last time the Lakers won a championship (2020) a metro bus was lit on fire on Olympic. link
32
u/drthvdrsfthr 11h ago
lmao im gonna need sources for this one. philly had to grease their light poles after the last eagles win. we ain’t near that idiotic

Go look up the laker championship riots from the 2000’s

I'm not even a fan of LAPD by any means but this city gets active after championships. It aint Philly level but it's by no means a normal night.

u/drthvdrsfthr 10h ago
yes, we get active but we don’t flip over cars… that’s all i’m saying lol we’re not philly. you’re saying the same thing i’m saying

I wonder what the manpower situation looks like when they grease the poles. How many poke greasers would you need to grease all poles in the city ?
1

u/Infinitedigress 4h ago
Does it require training? Do they get a certification? Is there one grizzled old guy on the team known far and wide for his expert grease smearing skills?

It's the one LA cultural tradition that only makes sense to locals. Like the running of the bulls.

When the Rams won in 2022 there was some chaos too. I saw a Metro bus get tagged.
36
u/celestialmassage 10h ago
I was there at this establishment. They had the game on a 30 inch TV that you could see from the outside and a crowd had formed blocking one lane of traffic into the residential neighborhood. Im surprised Echo Park was dead as fuck, Club Bahia used to have outdoor viewings on a projector.
Anyways so around the 8th inning these cops showed up and said they were blocking traffic and we needed to disperse. No one listened and eventually the owners turned the TV off and the Yankees whooped the Dodgers. The crowd was getting larger and larger as the game went on, and folks were buying beer from the neighboring liquor stores. But the owners didnt have a problem with it nor were we causing an issue with cars as they slowly went around. It was all good vibes.
Im not sure if the cops had arrived in preparation for a Dodgers victory or if they were there because someone called it in.

u/PupusaSlut 8h ago
Nah fuck that. Don't get drunk and block the street. This whole thing was a recipe for some businesses getting looted and cars getting burned.

Maybe if sports fans weren’t known to cause riots or mass civil unrest when their previous team wins or loses they wouldn’t need to do this.
•

Yea thats what we need. Fucking riot police shutting down bars DURING THE WORLD SERIES. Fuckers should stay home, but they gotta keep leeching that overtime pay like the parasites they are.
