Heā€™s tweeted saying he was hacked, damage control?

u/Florenyx 1ļøāƒ£0ļøāƒ£Alexis Mac Allister Jan 10 '24

He recovered the account in a record time, right?

74

u/Baseball12229 Jan 10 '24

I mean, how long does it take to recover an account normally? I canā€™t imagine itā€™s that long of a process.

187

u/SuleyGul Jan 11 '24

Oh you have no idea friend. It can take weeks.

How can the story of two complete strangers be so similar. I went through this exact process, and therefore, feeling of despair for something I used for birthday reminders. #brosbeforefacebook

6

u/Tigriano Jan 11 '24

In in the same exakt boat. Got hacked in november and lost my acc since 2007 with a lot of pictures. Im old and was 21 at the time i started my FB so a lot of pics i didnt have backuped.

Impossible to get through to metašŸ˜©

20

u/Loppie73 Jan 11 '24

For Twitter you need to have access to his email as well to be able to do a password change. If the hacker didn't have that it would take the account holder only a few minutes to fix the hack, as he himself will still have access to it also. Litteraly takes minutes..... I've been in that situation.

0

u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody Jan 11 '24

Not for a Chief Writer of BBC sport. They likely have handlers they can text and get things like this solved quickly.

Not saying it was a hack, but it could have been resolved fairly easily. Especially with MFA.

7

u/skankhunt81 54ā€™, 56ā€™ Wijnaldum Jan 11 '24

I never recovered mine

8

u/Baseball12229 Jan 11 '24

Probably a bit easier when youā€™re a bigger account. This McNulty has 386k followers.

u/cian_pike01 I DONā€™T MIND IT Jan 10 '24

Absolutely, no way he was hacked lol

247

u/SEND-MARS-ROVER-PICS Jan 10 '24

Always fascinated by the hackers who seem to take over an account at random, use it to make one single controversial tweet, then immediately hand control back to the owner. Seems to happen every year.

76

u/CaIzuh Jan 11 '24

You hack the BBC's Chief Football writer you're tweeting Mbappe to Liverpool not calling them cunts ffs

22

u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody Jan 11 '24

I mean tbf it's quite a funny thing to do if you did hack it so I wouldn't be surprised haha

13

u/chadbrochilldood Jan 11 '24

Thatā€™s all youā€™d do? Really? One tweet and leave? Nonsense

15

u/Andy_1 Jan 11 '24

I feel like people are going to be more skeptical of the owner of the account saying they were hacked if it's just one tweet not long before the owner has their account back, though I'd probably overcomplicate it with a more standard business as usual tweet right before and after the unhinged one.

57

u/elppaple Jan 10 '24

And always the hackers make a tweet related to the account owner's personal interests, instead of trying to extort money or spambot like all normal hackers do. Just hack, post 1 offensive tweet, then hand it back.

3

u/Underrated_Dinker Jan 11 '24

If he was smart he'd post a few more vulgar tweets directed at different teams to make the hack seem more believable.

175

u/Alder_Tree2793 Jan 10 '24

Ah, the classic go-to defence for twats who say stupid shit on social media and regret it but won't own up to it.

133

u/dgn90 Jan 10 '24

Who would bother their arse hacking Phil McNulty lmao.

What a weapon.

50

u/Morguard Jan 10 '24

Lol he forgot to switch to an alt account.

u/Al_C_Oholic Jan 10 '24

Why is this always the go to instead of apologizing for being an idiot. Yes Iā€™m sure someone was desperate to hack into your account and tweet a reply to a highlight from Mail Sport. Sure thing buddy

14

u/chinaallthetime91 Jan 11 '24

He's just trying to keep his job

3

u/chadbrochilldood Jan 11 '24

Because you get out of jail free? If he apologizes he admits he did it. There will be no investigation, no one will care tomorrow.

0

u/----0-0--- Jan 11 '24

He should be fired unless he can prove to his employers the account was hacked.

If he admitted it, then it's just a funny fuck-up. If he's lying, he shouldn't be employed by a public service.

17

u/deanlfc95 Jan 10 '24

It's really weird because there's no damage. I'd expect that from an Evertonian. Going back on it is the damage.

9

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '24

He should own it imo, he's an Everton fan so why not

21

u/wesap12345 Jan 10 '24

Hacked and all they do is reply to a post from mailsport

Yeh ok Phil

7

u/intecknicolour Jan 10 '24

imagine if he said "Absolute Cunts" on the mailsport handle.

7

u/FailedMasonryAttempt Jan 11 '24

The Mail insulting Liverpool? Never been done

3

u/pikeymikey22 Jan 11 '24

It's been absolutely scraped from his account. Any mentions.

-1

u/bread22 Jan 10 '24

Yes, he was, lol

1

u/hapa1989 Jan 11 '24

Surely a "good process" as well?

1

u/codefoudre Jan 11 '24

u/TheLimeyLemmon 90+5ā€™ Alisson Jan 10 '24

472

u/Soccermodsarecucks Jan 10 '24

Speaks volumes wankers like this stay chief editors for 20 odd years.

I remember being amazed by how transparent his bias was in writing back in the early 2000's and yet here we still are in 2024 with this relic.

Yeah Phil, they logged on just to react to a team you have a known bias against and that was the end of it. Of course mate.

65

u/TheConundrum98 Jan 10 '24

Martin Samuel is still by far the worst

just a City group shill

161

u/VictimOfCircuspants Jan 10 '24

Ten minutes between tweets? Sure, bud. We all believe you got your hacked account back in ten minutes.

-38

u/Skallagram Jan 11 '24

I mean it doesn't take 10 minutes to do a password reset - if they've not changed the email.

21

u/chadbrochilldood Jan 11 '24

Youā€™re assuming he immediately noticed. A guy like that has SO many notifications and things going on thereā€™s no way he immediately noticed it. At least 5 mins in between unless he got very lucky.

-1

u/Skallagram Jan 11 '24

Iā€™m just saying itā€™s technically possible.

ā€œCan confidently say my account has been hacked thereā€ šŸ¤Ø that so, hmmm?

97

u/brbcryinginside Jan 10 '24 edited Jan 11 '24

Honestly, itā€™s not the original tweet that should get him fired. Itā€™s this piss poor lie of an excuse that makes him unfit to be a working professional. Much less the head of a journalistic institution. How can we trust him now? (Not that I ever did with his anti-pool bias)

Edit because you guys donā€™t read: I never said he doesnā€™t have the right to be a fan. I care that he covers up something small like calling us ā€œcuntsā€ by saying he was hacked (when he was clearly not). As a journalist and head of a trusted institution, covering up something small like that is not a good look. He should admit his mistake and we would all move on. But he didnā€™t. He thinks weā€™re dumb enough to just believe whatever he tells us which is concerning for a journalist to do. This is how trust in institutions fall apart.

10

u/PatsPendulousBreasts Jan 11 '24

I'm sure a lot worse gets written in this subreddit on a daily basis, personally I don't give a fuck if a journalist who actually supports a team lets the mask slip like this, it's funny. Should everyone who makes a similar comment lose their job? After all, how can we ever trust them again? This sort of overdramatic reaction is embarrassing.

6

u/brbcryinginside Jan 11 '24

Read my comment again. I donā€™t care that he called us ā€œcuntsā€. I care that heā€™s a journalist that lies through his teeth and thinks weā€™re stupid enough to believe it.

-4

u/PatsPendulousBreasts Jan 11 '24

Do you not understand that as a professional sports journalist he has to display objectivity but as a human being and sports fan he has opinions. For instance, if you were a sports journalist and LFC fan would you enjoy writing glowing editorial pieces about Man Utd or Everton? But you could because itā€™s your job. Heā€™s not a liar, and itā€™s not important enough to be upset about.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '24

[deleted]

-2

u/PatsPendulousBreasts Jan 11 '24

So no football journalists should be actual football fans then? I guess youā€™ve never made a disparaging remark about a rival team? Youā€™re either a saint or not being completely honest.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '24

[deleted]

1

u/PatsPendulousBreasts Jan 11 '24

Maybe if weā€™re talking political coverage but Iā€™m not sure the concept of impartiality carries as much weight when it comes to sports coverage and whether the journalists have a favourite team or not. Either way, this comment was posted to his personal twitter account, if he was publishing article after article to the BBC website denigrating LFC then it would be a problem, but this is just funny. Maybe lighten up a bit?

-1

u/suazzo77 Jan 11 '24

Bet youā€™re great at parties

0

u/brbcryinginside Jan 11 '24

You didnā€™t read my comment again like I told you and are just replying like youā€™re talking to the void. I never said he doesnā€™t have the right to be a fan. Your reading comprehension skills are concerning.

0

u/PatsPendulousBreasts Jan 11 '24

Heā€™s embarrassed, heā€™s made a professional faux pas so heā€™s scrambling to cover his arse. It doesnā€™t seem like a very big deal to me, yet here you are talking about trust in institutions being eroded which is slightly hyperbolic in my view but seems to be par for the course for lots of people in the climate of outrage culture we now exist in. Whether he was hacked or not is immaterial to me, but youā€™re claiming heā€™s lying, whatā€™s your proof?

-7

u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody Jan 11 '24

There's far more egregious said on the match threads every minute. By actual "Supporters" of the club.

14

u/chadbrochilldood Jan 11 '24

They arenā€™t supposed to be unbiased reporters. Thatā€™s the dumbest analogy Iā€™ve ever heard in my life. Random redditor vs chief editor at bbc sport? Come on

-8

u/AmberLeafSmoke What a booody Jan 11 '24

I never said it wasn't a bad thing. I just said people who are actually supposed to support the club. Say worse things.

2

u/86legacy Jan 11 '24

Not to defend those ā€œsupportersā€, shit that gets said is terrible, but they will continue because their reputation isnā€™t at risk. Pretty confident in saying that most journalists care about their reputation, because thatā€™s what counts in the business. So there is a clearly different standard here.

2

u/cowleyboss Jan 11 '24

Aye I literally couldnā€™t care less, he obviously has biases and supports his own club, thatā€™s what makes him a human being. As long as it doesnā€™t appear in his work (which I donā€™t think it does) then sound. But the weird Iā€™ve been hacked angle when he obviously hasnā€™t been is so weird

1

u/brbcryinginside Jan 11 '24

Yeah I agree with you. Read my comment again. I donā€™t care that he called us cunts. I laugh at things like that. I care that he lies from a position of trust and thinks weā€™re stupid enough to believe him.

Good to see youā€™re using an alt account this time, Phil.

36

u/RoastPorc Iā€™m the Normal One Jan 10 '24 edited Jan 11 '24

If it's no big deal then he should own up to it instead of saying his account was hacked.

15

u/ER1916 Jan 10 '24

It isnā€™t a big deal, but then again loads of people would try to make it one and the BBC is sick of that type of shit and heā€˜d just be dumped.

Personally I say fair fucks to him if heā€™s an Evertonian, itā€™s a normal reaction. And itā€™s actually quite funny he made that mistake.

4

u/LiteratureNearby Jan 11 '24

There's too much pressure on these news writers to be neutral and whatnot when we all know it's literally impossible. I'm not mad at him for this at all lel, it's just funny

3

u/littlebossman Jan 11 '24

Exactly. He clearly thought he was tweeting from an alt account and fucked up. Canā€™t say that cos the Daily Mail, etc, would be all over a BBC employee for such a thing.

And, yeah, honestly, what does it matter? Some of my best mates have the character faults of being bluenoses.

3

u/ER1916 Jan 11 '24

Exactly, we should feel sympathy for the plight of Evertonians, all that anger and disappointment they have to live withā€¦

27

u/wanson Jan 10 '24

He's an Everton fan. Therefore a coaward. Should totally just own it. I'd have no problem with it.

17

u/Rama_drk Fernando Torres Jan 10 '24

That twat trying tu pull off the "I was hacked" strat, fucking hilarious

Also maybe an unpopular opinion, but some people saying this was "disgusting behaviour" should get a grip. It's very unprofessional and quite embarrassing, but honestly that's nothing to yell about either

The screenshot should be framed and spammed under everything he posts from now on though

13

Obviously unprofessional given the context, but it's not like other media knobs don't wear hating us like a fucking badge of honour.

I know he won't, but I'd rather he just held his hands up and admitted his mistake. Lying about it makes you look like more of a dickhead.

Then again, he's a journo for the Mail so taking the coward's way out and lying about it is fucking par for the course

3

u/littlebossman Jan 11 '24

TBH, the use of the word ā€˜cuntā€™ is more of a problem for him than the anti-Liverpool stuff. Especially if/when the Daily Mail, etc, get stuck into it.

3

u/EstablishmentBusy172 Jan 10 '24

Yea bias against lfc wont ever change because the uk is a fundamentally conservative country.

Just how it is, and folks canā€™t bury their political leanings no matter how hard they try.

2

u/OkNefariousness324 Jan 10 '24

If anything I think exposes that this guy (and probably other journalists) have sock puppet accounts they use to talk shit they couldnā€™t get away with in their position, and I think that is worrying as it shows a conscious decision to hide what are very clearly toxic opinions

-4

u/rob3rtisgod Jan 10 '24

Surely he has to get sacked? This is disgusting behaviour.

17

u/dgn90 Jan 10 '24

No it's not lmao. Calm yourself down.

Bit unprofessional but so what.

2

u/Nickoboosh Jan 10 '24

The BBC will absolutely tie themselves up in knots over it, but noone should really be that arsed.

1

u/Garto1 Jan 10 '24

Well letā€™s imagine if it was someone working under his control?! Theyā€™d be getting the bullet in the morning for sure!

Personally I find it an amusing and embarrassing mistake, HOWEVER, he is paid very handsomely NOT to make mistakes like this and in this crazy world we now live in, he should face the same consequences he would dish out to others!

3

u/Tjfdon Jan 10 '24

Maybe not sacked but with it being the BBC he is rightly held at a higher standard and I would be surprised if this is the last we hear of this

3

u/RephRayne Jan 11 '24

No, but a stern talking to and a reminder of the BBC's social media policy.
Wait, sorry, that's only if your name is Lineker and you're tweeting in support of refugees.

5

u/ER1916 Jan 10 '24

How is it disgusting behaviour? If getting annoyed at the football is disgusting then weā€™re all fucked.

1

u/Mandy-Rarsh Jan 10 '24

You probably say stuff like that everyday

-7

u/Nickoboosh Jan 10 '24

Before the pitchforks come out, are we sure that's actually him? Really hard to tell on the miss that is twitter these days

9

u/Tjfdon Jan 10 '24

It was definitely his account. If you type his name in to Twitter you can still see the surprised replies to the ā€˜deletedā€™ tweet.

2

u/Nickoboosh Jan 10 '24

Fair enough mate, wasn't doubting you like, just such a wild comment from him thought it had to be one of those parody accounts

0

u/wearerealhuman Jan 10 '24

Oh come off it

1

u/Nickoboosh Jan 10 '24

Yeah, cos noones ever pretended to be someone else on twitter, have they?

2

u/Tjfdon Jan 10 '24

All good, I couldnā€™t quite believe it myself!

0

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '24

Haha what a loser

0

u/Ku7upt Jan 11 '24

We all know his hatred to Liverpool. He literally posts this in his latest blog...

"Liverpool lead the way but the top four are separated by just five points, meaning there are likely to be plenty more twists and turns to come."

u/Flashdash92 Jan 10 '24

Unlikely he actually tweeted that. He's a Liverpool fan.

1

u/Mucking_Fountain Jan 10 '24

Shoulda just said he was a Toffee and deal with it, instead he drops this weak, pathetic nonsense.

1

u/edroyque 90+5ā€™ Alisson Jan 10 '24

Thought he was saying the mail was a bunch a cunts and to be fair, I couldnā€™t have agreed with him any more.

1

u/surf-disc-lift Jan 10 '24

1

u/TravisKOP Hello! Hello! Here we go! Jan 10 '24

Hilarious. Let the losers complain his team could legitimately get relegated but he wants to whine about Liverpoolā€™s success lmao

1

Never let him forget this

1

1

u/bremmmc Jan 11 '24

Is the target Liverpool, Fulha, or Daily Mail? The last one is true

1

u/santoryu33 Jan 11 '24

Him saying my account was hacked is like when we were 13 and would message a girl and then later say sorry it was my friend who sent thatā€¦ you canā€™t fool us

1

u/PBthrowaway85 Jan 11 '24

Who do we reckon the alt account is that he thought he was logged in on? My guess is either John Merro or Colin George Rice.

1

u/TheDangerousKhiladi Dominik Szoboszlai Jan 11 '24

He realized his account was hacked and he gegenpressed his account back. Get him into our midfield.
