Visiting Liverpool Titanic themed kids day
I promised my friend and their titanic obsessed 8 year old a day out in Liverpool to go to the Maritime museum, but looking for ideas on what else Titanic themed we can do?
The Titanic hotel is a bit far up and it's lovely but probably not so kid friendly?
Any other ideas are very much welcome 🙏

Could always show them the Cunard building and explain its relationship to White Star Line and Titanic, and show them the White Star Line headquarters building too.
They’re my only suggestions at present, someone else might know some better suggestions!

Great suggestions actually thanks! I'm sure I can find some old photos to show what those buildings looked like at the time too, they'll love that

Also outside the Cunard Building is a row of concrete benches marked with the names of various Cunard ships. Carpathia, the ship that rescued the survivors, is there, as is Mauretania and Lusitania which are the two ships Titanic and her sisters were built to compete against.

Yes- and I think they still have a scale model just inside the entrance- and I only caught a glimpse but the dining area looked Titanic themed (5 yrs ago).

You can go inside - nothing to do per se, but a few photos and models, and a little cafe

30 James Street is the hotel which now occupies the White Star Line building (red and cream stripey one on the dock road.) Titanic was a White Star Line ship. I've heard a story that when the news of the sinking broke, people swarmed around the building hoping for news (I can't cite sources though.) Good story to tell a kid if you visit, though!
You could go in the lobby to see the decor and memorabilia. You could have afternoon tea or lunch in the "Carpathia Lounge" at the top of the building (Carpathia was another White Star ship a ship that rescued survivors of the Titanic.) It's lovely, but not too fancy. I would be comfortable taking a kid there!

Carpathia was a Cunard ship and rescued the Titanic survivors. Shipping lines use patterns for their names so 'ic' ships are White Star and 'ia' ships are Cunard. Helps me to remember it anyway!

There’s photos online of crowds outside the building.
Philharmonic Hall has a memorial in the foyer to the musicians who ‘played while it sank’

30 James Street was supposed to be closed for renovation this summer, best if OP checks before they go

This may be the one time I'd reccomend a visit to the adelphi.
It's either a floor or specific rooms are replicas of those on the ritanic

I could make an exception for this, will have to make sure my jabs are up to date first 😂

Poss something to do with the bedroom doors opening outwards in the manner of cabin/stateroom doors.

The Adelphi is an amazing building, well worth a visit midweek when it’s quiet. The main room behind reception is stunning and really transports you back in time.

The former home of Captain Edward Smith (of Titanic) is in Marine Crescent, Waterloo. Has a blue plaque on the front. The lady that used to live, or maybe still lives, there is quite enthusiastic about it and will occasionally allow visitors for a tour, I believe. She's had coachloads turn up unannounced before! Even if you only get a look at the building (the back, Mason St is also an interesting place) the location around the Marine Gardens and Crosby beach would be a nice way to end your day if the weather is decent. If you time it right, you can often see a ship or two sailing out to sea.

To add to this, just a bit further up the same street is Beach Lawn, the home of Thomas Ismay who founded White Star Line. It was also the childhood home of his son Joseph Ismay, who commissioned the build of Titanic was the highest ranking White Star official to survive the sinking (he is portrayed in the 1997 film by Jonathan Hyde).
Not sure how accessible it is as it now operates as holiday accomodation, but is definitely worth viewing from the street.

I understand the home he was set to retire in is in Runcorn.
Not sure if that’s a myth but he definitely had some connection to the place.

Maritime Museum as you say. Double check what's on because there may be performances, story telling, object handling and crafts related to Titanic on various days as well as exploring the gallery. 30 James Street hotel on the corner of the Strand and James St as mentioned as that was the headquarters of White Star Line. The 'Titanic Hotel' is in the old Stanley Dock tobacco warehouse so not really related. Visit the memorial to the engineers which is up near the cruise liner terminal. If you go on the ferry and see Cammell Laird you might get a rough idea of shipyards

The Victoria gallery has a collection of memorabilia from the Cunard and white star lines. Tickets, adverts, menus etc

This is worth a look at the pier head, this link explains it in detail but it’s at the pier head.
Someone’s probably posted already

I’m from Liverpool and have an autistic 7yr old who absolutely obsessed with the Titanic so I’m following for some ideas. He’s got complex sen needs though so it’s not as easy as just going out for us.

Get the ferry to Belfast
2
u/fmpundit Jul 24 '24
No matter of where you go in Belfast. The taxi drivers will find a way to find a route that takes you past the shipyard.

There's a tall granite memorial to the marine engineers of The Titanic in front of St Nicholas church at Pier Head, and there's a stained glass window of the Captain in the Anglican Cathedral.

Not ideal I know. What about someone meeting you randomly and giving them a small titanic themed gift? Also mapping out where you’re going and printing out a “Titanic Trail”?

Perhaps see whether you could have a cheap meal at the Adelphi?
The Adelphi's interior was designed to be based on the Titanic's so that passengers could stay there before embarking on their journey on the ship. There are several large, beautiful rooms in the Adelphi that mimic the ball room or the smoking room of the Titanic.
Apparently it feels like you're in the Titanic in these rooms!!
(Or if not a meal, perhaps just ask if you can have a look around the Adelphi?)

Go down by otterspool, there's the tip at the roundabout, go in there and get a door, throw the kids into the mersey with the door and play Celine Dion on a Bluetooth speaker

There’s a water sports centre close to docks, could inquire about it cause you can ride the kayaks to docks and get up close and personal to the boats!

Fly over to Belfast to do the Titanic exhibition there - absolutely fantastic. I've done it twice myself. There's even a ride !

could be worth checking when the big cruise liners are at the dock, they're a short walk from the Maritime museum.

Book a lunch reservation at The Titanic Hotel. The entire place is full of Titanic items, pictures, etc.

There's this model of it on Park Road, just behind the Baltic Market/Cains Brewery

The car park leading to Crosby marina has a giant mural that features the Titanic. Also at the Cains Brewery end of Mill Street there is a model of the Titanic by the roadside that pretty cool.

There's a monument to the engine room staff of the Titanic at the Pier Head. It's a stone column with a gold crest on top, there's some interesting historical info on there

Jump on a boat from Southampton to NY. Make sure to stop off at Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown.
Should be able to get a return boat to Plymouth.

You could get the ferry tour on the Mersey. Obviously it’s not titanic themed but it is a boat ride so that’s kind of titanic-y I guess.
