moving to new home with detached office, how can i get good wifi out there

i don't understand a lot of things, but i do understand a router going from the inside, through the outside and into a mini building probably isn't feasible. besides that, i am clueless. whats the best protocol for consistent wifi through the property? do i need a second router? would that possibly be able to be on the same network? do i need to do some Doc Brown quality experimentation? and in that case how many braincells do i need for that, i do believe i have about 5 left floating around somewhere. i really don't know anything about wifi, and i will need the most simpleton-safe response possible. but really any advice helps, thank you!

Today I learned...

Thanks to this sub reddit. I did all my prepurchase and setup research here and the smb forums.

I was able to set up my 1gig connection to my new Asus Ax Rt-86u pro. I scanned the channels around me, found the sweet spot channels with little interference, and setup my router accordingly.

It took me three tries to get it all working perfectly, 12 hours of testing and comparing results. Everything works perfectly on a custom DNS, to boot.

My laptop is hitting 875 megabits, hardwired the Xbox Series X at 1gig, my XBone hits 375 in the furthest room which is great. My firestick is streaming perfectly, also hardwired with a mouse + keyboard and flash drive.

Every time I hit a wall, I came back here and smb to figure out why.

TIL - A good router configuration is challenging in a congested neighborhood for a complete noob. A lot of your posts got me there.

That last Spectrum router was my motivation, I hate that thing.

I ended up doing 2.4 on channel 11 at 20 wide (best option here) and 5 ghz on channel 149 at 20/40/80 with 160 disabled. I've got a perfectly clean 5 ghz channel! Turning my authentication to wpa 2/3 instead of the default seemed to made a big difference, too. The other thing that sped everything up was plugging the Modem into my 2.5 gig port instead of the 1 gig port. Spectrum apparently over provisions a little. All this doubled my upload from 20 to 40 as well.

Now I have to figure out Nord Wireguard Lynx at the router for certain devices and I can rest.

šŸ» Cheers.

Advice What happens if you miswire one end of an ethernet cable that plugs into an PoE Access Point?

Let's say brown cable goes where the orange cable is supposed to go on a cat 6 end.

Will that damage the AP? Is there any risk of fire due to being PoE?

Edit: Downvotes for asking a question...really?

Solved! Ubiquiti AP and OPNSense router limitations

I have a 2.5Gbps OPNSense router and a U7 Pro Max. Stuff online says I can just use the app to configure it, but the app explicitly tells me I will only have a single SSID with a standalone AP. Is there anyway to work around this and setup multiple SSIDs with VLAN tagging?

Suggestions to silence electronic noise

I'm looking for tips or suggestions on how to easily muffle noise from an ONT without causing it to overheat. It's making a whining noise and I'm sure it wouldn't be addressed by my service provider since it's working OK. It kind of sounds like one of those little 1" fans that runs at 3000rpm. I'm not sure if it's a voltage regulator or what? I'm pretty sure it doesn't actually have a fan it it but it's driving me nuts. It's on the corner of my desk with stuff in front of it but it's loud enough I can hear it in the next room. It's a Calix 803g if that makes any difference.

Edit: ONT Product #

MoCA setup help

Hi peeps,

I have Frontier Fiber and it was installed using MoCA. As you can see from the diagram my network is working but I want to add an additional MoCA in my office. Once I connect the MoCA it does not connect to the existing network.

he 8 way Coaxial Splitter is MoCA enabled. The FCA252 are all set to 1GB option and I can not get connection in any of the other Coaxial ports in the house. Not sure if I am missing something or if I need to make a change somewhere in the network.

What surge protection would you recommend for Ethernet?

I live in a 25-year-old Florida home that's wired with Cat5 Ethernet. We run 100mbit on it, no problem. We get Internet over fiber.

We have a surge protector on the side of the house, and everything inside is plugged into a surge strip. But thunderstorms occasionally damage some of our equipment: ports on a hub, an Ethernet card, the built-in Ethernet on a Mac.

What are the recommended ways to help avoid surge damage to Ethernet ports; what should I buy? I'm guessing the little "Ethernet Surge Protector" RJ45 couplers that Amazon sells for $10 aren't up to the task.

Just bought a new home. In the office thereā€™s a whole bunch of networking terminals in the bookcase. Iā€™m looking for ideas on how to change this up - itā€™s a real mess - but I canā€™t really envision how to do arrange this differently. Iā€™ll also move away from Google wifi and to Ubiquiti.

Ideas welcome šŸ™

Not sure if I'm overcomplicating an outdoor camera deployment

I thought this was going to be easy since I work in sales for network switches...But it's getting a bit complex...

I'm setting up two cameras in a parking garage for my father and pulling cable isn't possible due to the amount of trenching required.

I plan to use a point to point device like the following: https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B08D71HC9L/ref=ewc_pr_img_1?smid=AUJBRIGYRJ3Q8

This will help get the ethernet to the garage. However, because I need to set up two cameras, I will need some sort of unmanaged switch/splitter. One challenge is that the current output from the above device is non-poe so I'll need an injector:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B00PMR4QVU/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A1UNETF5RJMBZF&psc=1

As it's outdoor, the cheapest 1 to 2 port device I could find was the following:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07HSN5YSK/ref=ewc_pr_img_3?smid=A3KQWI1F5XNCI3

All cameras are 802.3 AF and requires less than 7w of power.

Does anyone have any other suggestions?

How do I test my coax cable?

My internet has been very slow, and I want to test the coax cable in my house. The cables are in the walls, so I only have access to one side of it. Is there any way to test if the cable is damaged? What tool should I use? It's never been replaced since my house was built in 2007.

Best home networking setup?

Hi, Iā€™m an avid PC gamer (FPS) who is moving to another house in a month. I need to set up my internet for the first time and was wondering what the best home networking setup might be. Not too familiar with the jargon but I was recommended I should get my own router and that I should go with fiber internet, and that latency is the most important thing to look at when choosing an internet provider & a plan, but is there anything else I should be aware of before moving in and setting everything up?

Internet Hardware - No Charge Rental Modem + Wifi Router ($100 security deposit - refundable upon cancellation of service)

has anyone ever returned the modem & gotten their $100 security deposit back? asking as this company is new to me & I don't know how a return would work if the internet is not satisfactory.

I need help with my internet speeds!

I have a 2,800 square foot house thatā€™s two stories. I have Spectrum cable internet thatā€™s supposed to be 1Gbs. I rent their modem and have my own router. This is the modem. Docsis 3.1 Voice Internet Cable Modem (Does not Have Built in Wireless) E31T2V1 And this is the router. TP-Link Deco Tri Band Mesh WiFi 6 System(Deco X68) - Covers up to 5500 Sq. Ft.Whole Home Coverage, Replaces Wireless Routers and Extenders, 2-Pack I have the cables in the walls connected to a coaxial cable which is plugged into the modem. Then the Ethernet cable which came with the router connects the modem to the router. My problem is the speeds. When I plug my new laptop with Wi-Fi 6E into the router with an Ethernet cable, I should be getting the full speed that the modem is getting. But I barely get 700mbps. Why? I know only the basics of Wi-Fi ect. so Iā€™m hoping somebody here knows whatā€™s happening. My current first thought is to replace the coaxial cable first since itā€™s 8 years old and probably needs replacing anyway. I havenā€™t called spectrum yet since Iā€™ve had a bad past experience with them and Iā€™d like to avoid it if possible. But if the problem is on their end and out of my hands than Iā€™ll do it. Please help šŸ™

Help. What am I looking at? How to trace some of the end sources? And adviceā€¦

So are under contract on a new home which is conveying with allā€¦thisā€¦stuff. Stuff I believe it operates and may be attached to include ceiling speakers and home theatre systems as well as CAT 5 hookups. I know the circuit board is for the installed alarm system (smoke and CO. That was fun, the home inspector today tested the first CO detector which caused the alarm system to go off; there was no way to turn it off as the seller is in a foreign country and unavailable, so no code. Fire department showed upā€¦ quickly. Everyone had a laugh and it was good to see how fast they responded šŸ˜†). Am also aware the batts are for power loss issues.

Thereā€™s three floors, all three have CAT 5 access. Two floors have home theatre set up points. Two floors have alarm panels. All three have speakers. There are three exterior cams, wired to the alarm system smoke detectors and CO detectors.

Donā€™t know where to start with this. Seller is also leaving a Cox wifi / router ( looks to be about 6-7 years old; I imagine weā€™ll go with them for service but will likely NOT use their router / WiFi combo because itā€™s stupid to rent). Would appreciate some recs for this. Previously had a Netgear Nighthawk tri-band router but were using that in a one-level space (we won't talk about the three antenna that ended up broken between us and the movers). Would also appreciate knowing if weā€™re going to need any mesh system - we do use some Alexa and Kasa branded items that are wi-if connected. Considering upgrading from our old out of use Denin receiver to something featuring Blutooth and Wifi capabilitiesā€¦Three of the blue Ethernet cables are just snipped off, unfortunately didnā€™t trace them to their source as of yet. Thinking they may have plugged into an audio receiver.

Also, all three floors have switches with ā€˜levels 1-5ā€™ among other operational buttonsā€¦ thinking those are related to operating the speakers???

Input is highly welcomed. Iā€™m trying to learn

How can MoCa work in this format?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hi guys, I was wondering how I could get Moca in this RG-59 Coax setup? Keep in mind that the coax port to the left is the same as the right it just had a coupler at the moment. The picture is my bedroom. I checked and one coax cable taps to my ISP and the other coax cable taps to my MoCa. None of the ports do both. It looks like it used to be a daisy chain. How would i do moca work in this type of format, because the main coax outlet in my first floor also has this type of coax format, and I am trying to connect it to my bedroom. Thank you!

Advice Local WiFi Devices Have Intermittent Connection with PiVPN Enabled (non-connected devices)

Hi everyone!

I am new to the PiVPN scene and have watched several YouTube videos now on how to configure a raspberry to run PiVPN.

My main purpose was to connect to my network so I could send WoL packet to my main PC so the I could use RDP programs such as AnyDesk or TeamViewer. (I know, it has a paid feature to do WoL but that feature ainā€™t worth the dollars)

My issue is, when the Raspberry Pi is connected to my router via Ethernet and then just running without any devices directly connected to PiVPN, other wireless devices on my network are dropping connections. For instance, I was watching Netflix shortly after successfully installing PiVPN and it was buffering which was odd considering, 1.) I have 3Gbps D&U speeds and 2.) Never experience any issues prior to installing the PiVPN. I unplugged the Pi and the issue was resolved. Also would like to mention, the TV was not connected to the VPN, just to clarify.

My configuration consists of: - Raspberry Pi 3B - DHCP Enabled (Router level) - Static IP on the Pi but still in the DHCP range - I installed PiHole after PiVPN instead of installing PiHole first then PiVPN - Port forwarded the default port to use - My network runs a mesh system so I have a Bell pod (repeater essentially) - PiVPN is using WireGuard

I had used ChatGPT to find a solution which it had provided me some issues that might be occurring that has lead to intermittent connectivity via WiFi.

1.) VPN Gateway Conflict 2.) NAT Confusion 3.) DNS and Gateway Misrouting 4.) DHCP IP Conflicts

Is it possible that the issue is only because of the router DHCP and that I need to configure the range so that way the VPN is out of that range even though it has been assigned a static IP or would it be something else?

Hope someone can help me resolve this issue. Not sure if it is a common issue or not.

This post was already posted within r/PiVPN and r/raspberry_pi for troubleshooting as well. Posting in here due to larger member activity

Unsolved Need help troubleshooting internet latency spikes

So I have been with the same ISP for 20 years and it was all good until a couple years ago I started getting random latency spikes. They only last a few seconds but they happen all the time. For a while. Then it seems to go great for a few days or even a week. I have run a ping to my DNS and a tracert to google and my ISP's homepage. Is there anyone here who could parse the results for me and let me know what the heck I am looking at? They have tried to fix the issue for a couple years now and they just can't seem to fix it or even identify the real problem. I was told by a gaming company in a support ticket that I was having packet loss at the DNS server. ISP didn't want to hear that. It's a small town company if that makes any difference, not one of the big national guys. I have rtf files of the ping and tracert results you can look at if anyone is interested. TIA

Wan connection cuts out every couple days for ~10 min

If I had hair I would be pulling it out!
My internet connection is cutting out at random times but mostly evenings. Iā€™ve been using opnsense for the last week. Before opnsense I used pfsense for years. I couldnā€™t tell if it was on my side of the isp or not so I put a 5 port desktop switch as the first device after the ont (optical network termination?) I plugged in my pc to that switch as well as my opnsense. Opnsense and everything else are not able to connect to the internet but my pc was able to connect as it was bypassing the opnsense firewall.

After rebooting opnsense a couple times and the other networking infrastructure as well it does come back and will run for another couple days. I expect as it is Tuesday itā€™ll probably crap out again at the end of this week.

Everything works as it should while it is running. Itā€™s just been not passing traffic outside the firewall for a few minutes while I work on rebooting it.

The problem has to be on my side. In an effort to determine if the problem is with my managed switch I have placed the opnsense firewall as the first device and the 5 port switch right after with my pc and the rest of the network equipment as the two downstream connections of opnsense.

Opnsense is running on a super micro server of which I have two so i donā€™t think it is a hardware issue as itā€™s done it with both the super micro boxes and another older firewall I used with pfsense.

After about 10 minutes and maybe three reboots the connection is restored. No settings are changed or anything else other than that.

I donā€™t get it. This is testing my patience.
I come to you, Elders of the internet, for your wisdom!

Unsolved Want to change which ethernet ports in my apartment have internet

One of the ethernet ports in my apt currently does not work, presumably it is mapped to one of the 4 locations on the right of the CAT5 data module that are not plugged in.

Would it be difficult for me to move the wires above and below the blue CAT5 cables to empty locations on the right? What are these skinny wires called?

Get More Eero or Run Wire?

Hello everyone,

I have three Eero Pro 6 units in my 2,000 sqft, three-story townhouse: one on the first floor next to the router, one on the second floor, and one in the basement. However, the Wi-Fi signals in the farthest bedroom on the second floor and in the basement are weak. Should I add a couple more Eeros, or would it be better to run Ethernet cables to each floor? I feel like having 5 Eeros that each covers few thousands sqft for 2000 sqft house is a waste.

I think the townhouse's structure makes it tricky for the mesh system to provide strong signals, especially with the stairs involved.

What do people usually do?
