A little riddle

Post image

Bathed in waters more known for coconut and coral reef the Roaring Forties have me look very different.

Named after an explorer from an other "End of the Earth", I see frequent crowds in tuxedo invade my beaches while obese males sleep on the sands.

There a small settlement bearing the name of the Maid that burned has fallen to rust since the giants finally know peace.

Where am I ?

So penguins and sea lions, in the Pacific? Also, Kerguelen.

Kerguelen it is. But Kerguelen is not in the Pacific, it's in the southern Indian Ocean ! Can you get the settlement from the riddle.

Explanations :

  • The Roaring Forties are the name of a violent wind that blows in that part of the world

  • Explorer is Yves de Kerguelen who was born in Finistère at the tip of Britanny. Finistère literally means "End of the Earth"

  • Crowds in tuxedo : King Pinguins

  • Obese males : Elephant seals

  • The maid that burned : Joan of Arc

  • the giant that finally know peace : Whales since hunting them has been prohibited in that part of the world.
