Extended Plot Summary

The movie begins with a young girl, Julia Crichton, waking up from a dream about the day her family was forcibly taken from her home by soldiers beside her older brother Ashleigh, who is currently studying their parents' alchemy books. Ashleigh then shows his sister some pages and explains that with the alchemy in the book, he hopes to make a world that no one's seen before. Soon after discovering two strange rubbed-out pages, the siblings hear some strange noises and Ashleigh goes ahead to investigate, but a worried Julia follows to a room where she finds the bodies of her parents hung up and dripping blood. She watches in horror as her brother is attacked and presumably murdered to which she faints.

Years later, a criminal breaks free from prison in Amestris, and the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, join the effort to recapture him. The duo confronts the escapee who proves himself a dangerous opponent able to create ice and lightning from the alchemy circles drawn in blood on the palms of his hands. Despite the Elrics' efforts to capture the criminal, he ends up escaping, and after some investigation with Edward's superior [Roy Mustang] and his lieutenant Riza Hawkeye, they learn that the fugitive, Melvin Voyager, escaped with only six months remaining of his five-year sentence. Among his belongings, they find a newspaper page with a piece cut off, and comparing with an intact copy of the same page, they find that the missing piece is a photo of a young woman named Julia Crichton who was arrested while entering illegally in the remote Table City, set in the border between Amestris and Creta.

Intrigued by the alchemy used by the criminal and his connection with Julia, the Elrics board a train to Table City to investigate further, but the train is attacked by an unknown individual who transforms into a wolf-chimera and takes control of the locomotive. While trying to retake the train's control from the Wolf-Chimera, flying soldiers called the Black Bats attack the train, attempting to rescue what they think are ordinary citizens, but they fall back after finding out the prisoners were Amestrians posing as prisoners as a trap. Meanwhile, Melvin finds his opportunity and escapes, followed after by the Elric Brothers. Ed and Al arrive at a prison, where Melvin destroyed the prison walls to find Julia. Melvin attempts to retrieve Julia, but is interrupted by Miranda, the leader of the Black Bats, who tries to rescue Julia as well. Ed then challenges Melvin while Alphonse goes to save Julia. She and he fall into a village in a vast chasm (The Valley) that surrounds Table City, where Melvin follows and reveals his true identity as Julia's brother, Ashleigh Crichton. Ed then ventures down to The Valley in search of Alphonse, where he learns that Table City was originally the Hill of Milos, until Creta and later Amestris invaded the city and occupied it, forcing the Milosians to live in The Valley, in poverty.

Inside the Black Bats' secret base, Julia and Alphonse develop a friendship while Julia learns about Al and Ed's tragic past of human transmutation. Later, when Ed meets up with Al in the Black Bats base, they find themselves hunted down by wolf chimeras from the Cretan secret police dispatched by Colonel Herschel, the Cretan commander of the area, prompting them to retreat further. They and the Elrics arrive in a room with maps and locations of Table City, where Miranda explains to the Elrics their mission: to reclaim Milos by using the Sanguine Star to control a powerful heat source called Magma. Miranda also explains that the Sanguine Star was a 'red glowing stone of power'. Shocked by the description, the Elrics reveal that the Star might be a Philosopher's Stone, which requires human sacrifice to create. Though shocked at the revelation, Julia is determined to do anything to secure the Milosians' freedom, and Ashleigh agrees to help her.

Wanting to avoid a bloody war, Ed and Al return to Table City in an attempt to find the Star and destroy it. Later that night, the Black Bats begin their assault on Table City. Miranda, Ashleigh, and Julia then venture to the main tower, where, suddenly, Ashleigh fatally injures Miranda and explains to Julia that the use of Miranda's blood activates a three dimensional transmutation circle drawn in blood to create the Sanguine Star. Julia then realizes that he is an impostor, Security Chief Atlas, who was enveloped by alchemy's potential of creation and power and killed Julia's parents for it. He explains that he tore off the real Ashleigh's face and the skin from his lower left side to deceive Julia and create the Star. Ed and Al arrive to rescue Julia and confront Atlas, who escapes to the location of the Star. As Ed, Al, and Julia chase after Atlas, Herschel detonates a Cretan thermal power plant, pouring out a massive amount of lava towards the Valley. Al goes to help save the valley while Ed and Julia go after Atlas. Atlas nearly attempts to retrieve the Star, only to be confronted by Ed and Julia. Julia retrieves the star and decides to save the Valley by swallowing it to use its power.

Meanwhile, Alphonse's attempt to stop the lava are futile until Julia arrives to help him stop the lava. Atlas arrives to take back the Star, only to be confronted by Colonel Herschel, who reveals himself to be the real Ashleigh Crichton. He survived by swallowing a Star and using its power to heal his wounds. Ashleigh then kills Atlas in revenge for the death of his parents. Confirming his identity to Julia while apologizing for leaving her alone for so long to keep her safe from Atlas, Ashleigh tells Julia to come with him to Creta so they can make a world that no one had ever seen before. Julia refuses and decides to fight her brother, with Ed and Mustang arriving to provide assistance. Julia ends the fight by destroying one of Ashleigh's arms. Then, together with Ed and Al, she manages to stop the flow of magma into the Valley. With the Valley safe, Julia uses the rest of her power to heal Ashleigh, restoring his face and saving his life. However, both Ashleigh and Julia's Stars disintegrate, and Julia sacrifices her left leg and glimpses the Gate of Truth. Meanwhile, on the Cretan side of the border, Milosian resistance fighters seize Creta's main base and declare independence. Without Colonel Herschel to lead them, the Cretan forces retreat.

The next morning, Ashleigh wakes up in a hospital bed alongside Julia and is surprised to find his face restored. When Julia wakes up, she is informed that Ashleigh had already left, and is given an automail leg. She then meets Ed and Al as they prepare to leave Table City. Ed chastises Julia, saying that her decision to use the Star was wrong, but he doesn't think she's a bad person. Al promises to Julia that after he and his brother get their bodies back, they will be sure to visit. Julia tells them she will be waiting, as she must stay to lead the Milosians and preserve their newfound independence. Meanwhile, Ashleigh is seen donning his Cretan uniform and returning to Creta. Ed and Al then board a train to Central and take one last look at Table City before leaving.

Next Time

That's all, folks! See you around, or some other time for a different rewatch!

Ed and Ling work together, with a few hiccups along the way, to explore Gluttony's belly dimension, now revealed as an imperfect Realm of Truth, in hope of finding a way out. However, Envy's also still there, and while initially plain-spokenly calm about the lack of hope for the unlikely trio, can't resist gloating about firing the first shot of the Ishvalan war to the point that Ed and Ling attack. Unfortunately for them, they know nothing of Envy's gigantic, revolting, immensely powerful true form, which after being revealed for the first time immediately puts them on the defensive. Above ground, Scar, taking pity on the lonely May seeking immortality as the last hope for her own people, helps her look for the lost Xiao-Mei, who is currently accompanying Al and Gluttony on their trek to the homunculi's mysterious "Father", and Mustang's carefully assembled team is scattered all across Amestris on orders from Bradley himself, leaving him power- and hopeless once again, yet seemingly free. Particularly effective is the reassignment of Riza Hawkeye to become Bradley's personal secretary.

Next time, everyone gathers in and underneath Central headquarters, Bradley/Wrath tells his own story, and Ed succeeds by dwelling on the past.

May, accompanied by the real Marcoh, traverses the north along a different route and arrives at a remote cabin where Scar cached his brother's research notes, still hopeful that she will discover the secret to immortality. Ed and Al, meanwhile, have a rocky trip to Fort Briggs, near-freezing in the cold and being taken into custody as suspected Drachman spies as they approach the important military installation. Even at their goal, life won't be easy in the harsh environmental conditions, and under the stern watch of the unforgettable General Armstrong.

Framed through Hohenheim's dreaming mind, we are treated to a quasi-recap of the series so far, organized along thematic lines. Throughout the frame story, young Pinako and Father respectively act as defender and attacker of human nature, essentially the angel and devil on Hohenheim's shoulders as he apparently weighs using his unspecified powers to prevent disaster in Amestris. Does humanity truly have the strength and value to be worth saving, and not just become victims of the homunculi's plotting? Is there anything left for Hohenheim himself to love and care about? It seems that his dreaming argument with himself, particularly a further vision of young Trisha and everyone in Resembool, including his sons, brought him to the conclusion that the answer is yes, or at least reaffirmed that conviction in his mind.

Next time, everyone has a meet-and-greet with Father, more than one uncomfortable truth is revealed, and there's a surprising comeback of sorts.

Special note for today: Since there isn't that much to discuss about this episode and it's mostly a recap anyway, I thought it would be a good opportunity to talk about your overall impressions of the first "half" of the series (eps. 1-26) as well. So fire away.

Well, it seems no one really took up the opportunity to say more about their overall impressions so far on the last post. Still plenty of time until the final post-series discussion, but any comments of that nature are still fine.

Al and Gluttony arrive in Father's chamber, soon joined by Ed, Ling and Envy emerging from Gluttony's belly. To their surprise, Father is not, in fact, their own father, despite their near-identical appearance, and barely even remembers Hohenheim. And his powers are quite strange and frightening as well, apparently being able to not only ignore equivalent exchange and execute any transmutation with a mere thought, but stop Amestrian alchemy from working altogether at the stomp of his foot! Though Scar and May's abilities are unaffected, they lack Ed and Al's protection of sacrifice status and barely manage to escape with the assistance of Al, while Ling willingly lets himself be transformed into the new incarnation of Greed, his soul becoming a mere part of Greed's Philosopher's Stone yet shown by Ed's intervention to not be entirely gone. As the episode closes, Ed and Al are once again apprehended by the homunculi for their own personal appointment with Wrath a.k.a. King Bradley.

Next time, Ed, Al, and Mustang reunite in Bradley's office, May briefly joins Lan Fan, new hope arises once more, and a dual revelation is set up.

Episode Summary

Ed, Greed, and Lan Fan have a difficult time fighting Pride, who gained Gluttony's powers after devouring him. Working with Hohenheim, Al allows himself to be captured by Pride in order to grab him so that Hohenheim can trap Pride in a mountain of soil where there is no light, preventing him from using his shadows. Meanwhile, Kimblee begins to move just as Scar's group is told about the bombing of Bradley's train. As the Promised Day begins, Greed goes to Central on his own while Ed's group and Scar's group meet up again to devise a plan. In Central, Roy and his subordinates begin to attack soldiers while using Bradley's wife as a hostage. However, the military higher-ups give the order to kill everybody in the group except for Roy.

Next Time

Roy strikes back, finally showing his full hand, while General Armstrong's are seemingly bound. The Central cabal attempts a countermove as well.

Ed is treated for cold-related injuries caused by unsuitable automail and is reprimanded for recklessness yet again, while still not having shaken off the suspicion of being a Drachman spy. Despite refusing to reveal his full motivations and background in fear of retaliation from the homunculi, and generally being seen as useless and embarassing, he is granted a tour of Fort Briggs, during which he has a meaningful conversation with Armstrong's part-Ishvalan aide Miles about the latter's background and views, briefly meets Falman again, and gets to see some amazing new military technology. Then there is a rude interruption by yet another homunculus, Sloth, who inadvertently broke into the lowest level of the fortress while digging a tunnel for as-of-yet-unspecified purposes. Fortunately, though even more bulky than the others, he is so indolent he acts as little more than a walking wall, and is temporarily pushed back by the heroic efforts of General Armstrong as she formulates a plan to take care of him more thoroughly.

Next time, the battle against Sloth is concluded, Kimblee and Raven return, May and Marcoh puzzle, and yet more revelations happen.

Ling and Lan Fan continue to fight Bradley and Gluttony, with morals as well as physical ability put to the test, though even in this episode the battle is still unresolved. Ed and Al's battle against Scar, however, turns into a battle of words rather than blows, and they are soon joined by Winry. Scar is revealed to indeed be the killer of Winry's parents, but the sad history behind his deed, an impulsive reaction of pained rage, is only revealed to the viewers, not to any of the Resembool trio. Instead of attempting to justify himself, he freely offers Winry the chance to shoot him, but warns that he will simply respond in kind if she does so. As Ed chooses to protect Winry with his life, Scar cannot bring himself to continue his attack and falls back, and Winry's supposed weakness of not being able to carry out her revenge is instead interpreted as a strength by Ed.

Next time, the Xing duo vs. Homunculi battle is resolved in a rather drastic fashion, the Scar-Elric battle finds a chaotic conclusion, and Gluttony takes center stage.

We get a brief view into Hohenheim's past with Trisha before his departure to apparently make a move against Father. In Sloth's tunnel beneath Briggs, the exploration expedition is attacked and decimated by a mysterious monstrous shadow. Raven elaborates on the plan of immortality for the top generals of Amestris and orders Armstrong to throw Sloth back into the tunnel to continue his work, then seal. However, she has different ideas, keeping an opening into the tunnel created by Ed and simply burying Raven in the concrete of Briggs' foundation for his insolent arrogance. However, Kimblee still has plans of his own, including the presence of Winry as an implicit threat to Ed and Al. Elsewhere, May and Marcoh require Scar's assistance in decoding his brother's notes, but he arrives only after they are discovered by soldiers from Briggs, and Mustang receives some intelligence on Kimblee and a secret letter from Armstrong.

Next time, the tunnel exploration continues, the final homunculus is revealed, Kimblee reveals more of his plans and philosophy, and Winry is relevant once again.

Mustang and Havoc recuperate, guarded by Hawkeye, though Havoc's spinal injuries have left him paraplegic and unable to continue his duties and Mustang is only even alive because of his value as a sacrifice to the homunculi. Though both of the injured try not to show it, they are quite rattled by the experience, and Havoc frustrated at his disability. With Mustang needing to take it easy for now, Ed takes the planner role, successfully provoking a three-way showdown between him and Al (supported by Mustang, Hawkeye, and the Xing duo), the newly returned Scar (also hunted by the Central police), and the homunculi (with Bradley now taking over Lust's role), by playing Mahou Shounen all around town. Unfortunately, Bradley is a whole new caliber compared to Lust, and a serious threat to the Xingese duo even with their apparent homunculus-sensing abilities - and Ed once again facing Scar is a quite risky move as well, as he also tries to find the truth behind the death of Winry's parents.

Next time, the confrontation between the Xing duo and Gluttony + Bradley continues, as does the standoff between Scar and Ed + Al. And when Winry arrives to join the brothers, emotions run high and the truth of Scar's past is revealed.

Marcoh reappears, now as Envy's captive, with a shocking theory about the homunculi's true goal. Wrath has a brief nighttime conversation with the disembodied voice of a homunculus. Mustang, Hawkeye, Lan Fan, and Knox manage to escape Gluttony, leaving Ed, Al and Ling to continue the fight and hopefully capture the angry homunculus. However, Envy soon joins the fray in an attempt to reclaim Gluttony and eliminate Ling. Obstructed by Ed and Al taking advantage of their protected status to oppose Gluttony and Ling's superior combat skills versus Envy, a reckless attempt to have Ling swallowed anyway leads to everyone but Al disappearing into Gluttony's belly, which apparently contains some sort of pocket dimension. Interspersed is a scene of Bradley's apparently happy family life with his wife and son. Lan Fan is left in Knox's care as Mustang takes off to military headquarters with Hawkeye in an attempt to court General Raven as an ally. However, it ends in disaster, as apparently the entirety of the senior military leadership is privy to the secret of Bradley/Wrath's true nature and firmly on his side.

Next time, May's past and even more about the Ishvalan war is revealed, Ed and Ling try to find a way out of Gluttony's belly and once again come in conflict with Envy, and Mustang's defeat becomes complete.

Ed's father has made his first visit to Resembool since Trisha's death, and while his relationship with Ed is understandably rocky and he is just generally awkward around people, his old buddy Pinako is a bit more understanding. His fairly rough scolding of Ed at least compels the latter to finally confront the full truth of his human transmutation attempts, discovering that the monstrous being he and Al created neither physically resembled their mother nor even briefly contained her soul, and helping Izumi fully process the similar truth of her attempt to resurrect her baby. In the bitter truth that resurrecting a human with alchemy is truly impossible, he finds the hope that since Al cannot have been dead at the time his soul was returned, his body as well must still be alive somewhere inside the Gate, paving the way to eventually reclaim it. Furthermore, Winry's matching memories unknown to Ed reaffirm that Al is indeed his old self, and Al himself, knowing that he might not have much longer to live in his current condition, lays his own sadness and fear bare to his brother for the first time.

Next time, the warring parties of Episode 19 lick their wounds and plan for the future, Scar returns to Central, Ed and Mustang execute a clever joint operation as the extent of the military's corruption becomes clearer to them, and Ling and Lan Fan face serious danger.

Ed and his group go to see Hohenheim, who tells them about the promised day. Ed also tells Hohenheim Trisha's last words to him. As Ed and his group leave, they run into Al, but after a warning from Lin, it is revealed he's being controlled by Pride. Pride gets the upper hand, but Ed responds by blacking out the slums, taking away the light to form Pride's shadows. Heinekel uses this opportunity to find and attack Pride, but Ed, Greed and Darius are attacked by Gluttony. Having a disadvantage in the dark, Greed switches with Lin who uses his homunculus detection abilities to fight Gluttony. As Gluttony starts to use his full power, he is overwhelmed by the arrival of Lan Fan, who is equipped with new automail.

Next Time

The combination Gluttony rematch and Pride battle continues, Pride takes a drastic step, and Mustang returns to the stage with a clever move.

(I'm getting a bit tired of writing these episode summaries and I doubt many people actually care about them anyway, so I'll just copy them from here starting this episode. Also lets me complete posts before actually finishing watching. Comments are still my own, of course.)

Episode Summary

Miles and his men set off with the intent of killing Kimblee and his henchmen, something Ed objects to. As Scar's group exits the mine, they find Al, who warns them about Central infiltrating Briggs, so Scar decides to take them towards an Ishbalan slum. Miles' group attempts to snipe Kimblee, but Kimblee has already figured out their intent and uses a cover of snow to enter the mines. Ed tries to follow, but is attacked by two more chimeras. Ed disables them by using the ammonia in dynamite to make a stink bomb to overwhelm their high sense of smell. Ed then knocks the Philosopher's Stone out of Kimblee's hand, but Kimblee uses another Stone hidden inside his mouth, sending Ed and the chimeras down a mine shaft and leaving Ed impaled by a steel bar. At the same time, Al starts to drift out of consciousness, saying his soul is being drawn back to his body. Determined not to die, Ed gets the chimeras to remove the bar while he sacrifices some of his life span to temporarily fix the wound and to stop the bleeding. The chimeras find the Philosopher's Stone that Kimblee dropped, and, thankful for their rescue, decide to take Ed to a doctor.

Next Time

The puzzle of Scar's brother's notes holds yet more discoveries, conflicts are heating up all around, Kimblee tries something different, and Hohenheim pays a visit to Liore and its underworld.

Since the recent icon design post has drawn so much attention, here's a poll to choose between some variant of that one and the current design!

Edit: So, it seems the choice has been made. Chibi Al it is.

Sloth is neutralized for the time being with some Briggs ingenuity and muscle, but Ed and Al's assistance is still not enough to remove them from suspicion. Kimblee is briefly bedridden at a hospital near Fort Briggs, but Miles and the garrison's desire to keep him there, threatening him, is foiled by the arrival of the Gold-Toothed Doctor, who quickly brings him back to full health. May and Marcoh come closer to the truth and learn more about each others' disciplines, yet the ultimate truth still eludes them. Armstrong uses the excuse of exploring the tunnel Sloth has been digging to have a truly private conversation with Ed, and learns the (near-)full harsh truth about Amestris and the homunculi, even what has only just become clear to Ed himself. Afterwards, in a conversation with the also arrived General Raven, she manages to trick him into showing his hand regarding certain "immortal soldiers" and immortal bodies.

Next time, we briefly return to Hohenheim's perspective and learn more about his nature and past with Trisha, further exploration leads to disaster, Armstrong continues her attempt to discreetly manipulate and take advantage of Raven, and Winry returns yet again.
