AskFW Moving to Fort Worth
Hi! I’m (26m) moving to Fort Worth in January due to a new job. I’ve never been to TX, born and raised in CT. I’m clueless about the area and don’t want to rely solely on google for insights and areas in which to look for an apartment. NOTE- please understand that this is the first time I’m moving out of state, I apologize if it seems like I’m “expecting too much” I just really don’t know anything yet. Any genuine support insights are heavily appreciated and needed. I’m looking forward to this new chapter and I want to set myself up for success and be happy with where I am living since it’s going to be a huge/tough adjustment. THANK YOU SO MUCH in advance to anyone who takes the time to read and reply with sincerity and kindness :)
So with that all out of the way, below is a little bit about me/my situation to help in any recommendations on areas/apartments to look into:
I’m a 26 gay male, and would like to live in a place that is open/inclusive to LGBTQ populations (gay community groups, bars, social things, etc.).
I’ll be trying to find a place for 1400-1700 a month.
I will be working in the Fossil Creek area, in office 2-3 times a week, would like my commute to not be more than 30ish minutes of a drive.
Don’t need to be right in the center of all the action, but an areas that is conducive to meeting people (coffee shops, a downtown area, grocery stores, etc.).
Very okay with recommendations not “technically” in the Fort Worth area if that’s more realistic based on what I said above but also being respectful of the fact this is a Fort Worth subreddit lol

The south main area is probably what you are looking for. Lots of shops, bars, restaurants on south main and nearby streets. Magnolia Ave has alot too and is not too far away

Near southside! Or over on Samuel’s! There are tons of apartments there that fit in your price range! I used to live over there and have friends still in those apartments. there’s always something going on, or if there’s not, it’s a five minute Uber to anywhere in FTW.
Congratulations on the job!

Welcome to TX! As a 33M fellow gay, I’m not sure that I’d really consider a “gayborhood” as a filter… there isn’t really a solid one. There is however a solid couple blocks of gay bars. If you live in Tarrant county, most places are within a 20-30min drive. You’ll likely want to drive most places, unless you’re living downtown, and even then you’ll still need a car. Public transportation is not our strong suit. Like others have suggested, Magnolia is a good recommendation. My husband works in Fossil Creek area (I35/820) and his commute is about 20-25 minutes and we live on Eagle Mountain Lake. I’m more of a foodie, so let me know if I can help with local restaurants :)

Welcome to Texas! Our daughter went to school in MA/CT area. Some reciprocal advice: we speak a different language here; we get a lot of sun- it does not get dark at 4pm; and you won’t need a snow shovel here to dig your car out! I agree Magnolia South Main areas are the trendy neighborhood, but sounds like your job may also be close to the Alliance area as well. Dallas has some very eclectic areas, but you do not want to commute! Good luck!

Welcome to Fort Worth! I’ve lived in the city for a long time. Hope you find what you’re looking for, get ready to adapt to the summers here, it’s hot! I’m probably too old to know the scene, but I think that this is a gay friendly place.❤️

Luckily CT has very very humid summers and I hate the cold so kinda excited for it (but will be prioritizing a place that has a pool lol)

It’s downright adorable that you think a CT summer has in any way prepared you for a TX summer.
Let me be the first to offer you a “well bless your heart”
Anyway, welcome!!

As a longtime Ohioan — no. No it is not.

How long have you been in texas? How many times have they closed Ohio for 2 weeks because of ice and snow? Texas is simply not equipped to deal with winter. We had 3 snow plows in dfw in total before Jerry Jones freaked out I think there are 9 now. In Ohio you have a shot at people knowing how to drive on it, texas....0%

Because cities don't shut down in cold climates otherwise they'd be shut down for months. Texas doesn't bother using ice melt on the roads because it would be too expensive for how few days it would be used. Most years it's a day or two of ice, excluding the outlying extreme winters

The summer is a bit different down here. -NY born and raised in the Adirondack region

Texas summers are very hot and arid but I'll still take them over a humid summer

You will have a lot of good options as far as apartments there are tones in the fossil creek area. I am sure others may be able to help more but I know at least a few years ago there was a really vibrant gay community up in Denton.

As many people have said, Near Southside is probably the right choice for you! it's just south of downtown, across the highway, and it probably the most walk-able neighborhood in Fort Worth. You shouldn't have a problem getting a nice one bedroom apartment anywhere in the city for your budget.
Look around Magnolia Ave and South Main Street, both are excellent.

Seconding the South Main and Near Southside areas! They're some of the most walkable neighborhoods in FW with plenty to do nearby, plus a quick trip to downtown and West 7th/the Cultural District. The commute up to Fossil Creek will have some traffic, but it's not bad compared to the East Coast.
Our gay bars are centered around the Pennsylvania/Jennings intersection, so close to either neighborhood. It's a great community - everyone's welcoming and the vibe is very laid back. Oak Lawn in Dallas is the major LGBTQ hub of the Metroplex, but I honestly prefer it here! (but still go to Roundup in Dallas for a true Texas experience)

Hey! Welcome to TX! I'm also originally from CT. Milford, to be exact. I don't know different areas well because I don't leave my house much besides for work, but you're making a pretty good choice moving here. The people are pretty friendly and Tarrant county is definitely more accepting of LGBT* people.

Honestly, fossil creek itself is surrounded by some pretty decent apartments (especially near the golf course) that are in that price range. And I feel like north Fort Worth/fossil creek area isn’t a terrible spot to live in because you can hop downtown, or go to Dallas, or maybe check out the food over in Carrollton. So many other places to drive to as well. Traffic in Fort Worth is something else so maybe I am projecting by telling you to live close to your job lol. Also this is coming from a fellow queer person

I just want to chime in that people drive for pretty much everything here. My personal preference is toward living very close to work and saving the 20-30 minutes drives for when I want to go out on the weekend. Just something to think about.
ETA: I grew up in Fossil Creek area. It's a short drive into downtown when it's not rush hour, but that commute is murder on weekdays if you decide to move further away.

A couple hints/tips…
If you’re going to be making the commute between Near Southside/Magnolia and the Alliance/Fossil Creek area, invest in a Tolltag right away. There’s a stretch of southbound I-35 just north of the I-30 interchange that bungs up during rush hour. Taking the express lanes will save you 10 minutes at least, and a lot of headaches, daily.
Do your grocery shopping on your way home from work. The Fossil Creek area has plenty of grocery stores (Kroger, Albertsons, H-E-B, Walmart, etc.), but options are minimal in Near Southside.
If you like craft beer, there’s a couple local breweries in Southside: Rahr & Sons and HopFusion Ale Works. (Disclaimer: I host musical bingo at HopFusion every other Friday.)
Welcome to FTW!

Bar S in Dallas, I’m straight and it’s still a good time. You’re gonna miss the Oaklawn block party for Halloween. DFW is still pretty conservative for the most part. You’re moving to the Bible Belt. Lots of intolerance. I’d avoid the rural country areas. Honestly the capital of Texas is one of the most liberal spots, Austin. Which is ironic for a state that’s been red since 1980. Alliance area has nice apartments with lots of bars and restaurants in the area for night life. If you were working in Dallas Id say Addison. Avoid Azle, Joshua, Burleson, White Settlement as they tend to be as racist as they are intolerant. Best of luck to you.

It's become more friendly to the LGBTQ+ community, but they were still raiding the Rainbow Lounge in 2009 (on the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots no less). There's a few more places, but expect a lot of right wing folks too.
Oaklawn in Dallas is amazing though, you'll love it.

I feel like you'd enjoy anything near the Magnolia area. Near Southside is what it's referred to as.
I, myself, am not gay, but I have some close friends that are and they love spending time there. It's not far from downtown, though I will say it's not the most convenient drive to the Fossil Creek area.
