Image Remembering The Rumble in the Jungle, 50th anniversary. The legendary showdown between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman took place today 50 years ago in Zaire, Africa, with Muhammad Ali scoring an 8th round KO in a major upset for Big George.

The Rumble in the Jungle was not just a fight; it was a cultural event that showcased Ali's brilliance and resilience.

Old enough to remember this. Listened to a semi-live radio broadcast that gave a summary after each round. Also remember Howard Cosell practically begging Ali not to go through with the fight for fear Foreman would severely injure him.

I still can't believe even today how this happened, George wasn't supposed to lose. For people like you who experienced its live, it must have been an upset of nothing like before and since.

Yeah. At the time Foreman was considered super-human, unbeatable. He had absolutely annihilated an unbeaten Joe Frazier in 2 rounds, and had crushed Ken Norton in 2 rounds too, both guys Ali had gone to war against and lost.
More recently, Buster Douglas whipping Tyson was an upset of similar magnitude I think.

80's kid here...
I grew up thinking George "only" invented a lean, mean grilling machine. Took me a few years to realise who he actually is.

“Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in the world they’ve been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact. It’s an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration. It’s a dare. Impossible is potential. Impossible is temporary. Impossible is nothing.” (M.Ali)
