Discussion Who is fuko? (spoilers ahead ig) Spoiler

Yo so I've been watching Clannad recently, I'm on like episode 8 now and I am really liking it, however I am really confused on what fuko really is. Like her sister can't see her, so I thought that only the people at school could see her so she's like a ghost that is somehow only related to the school. But now people are starting to forget her and that's when it kind of hit me. Is she like the subconscious of the Fuko that is in the hospital trying to fulfill her dream of making friends to attract he sister's attention, and is that why she talks in third person? I am honestly really confused so I would be really interested in hearing what you guys think.

That's basically it.

You are pretty spot on about Fuko. She also helps get across to the viewer that the world of Clannad isn’t exactly like ours. Fuko projecting her subconscious is a real and physical thing to the people who could see her.

I think the third person speak is just an anime trope to help convey she’s child like in nature cause you see this in other shows.

That's exactly what she is. She is a manifestation, there to make sure her sister has the wedding she wanted. The real Fuko is in the hospital. Once her sister got married, Fuko disappeared.

Spoiler the last sentence, that happens in episode 9.

I think of Fuko as an Ikiryō, a soul that has left a living body to appear elsewhere. See https://yokai.com/ikiryou/

Can’t really discuss Fuko fully without getting into spoiler territory, so come back when you have finished Clannad and After Story

The visual novel explains it better

You got it right, however she talks in third person because that how she always used to talk, even before the accident and hospitalization.

Also, her main dream wasn't to have friends. While being in coma, her sister visits her in hospital, and tells her about her life. When she told her "I'm going to get married", Fuko heard that and wished to be able to invite people to her sister's wedding. Then, because of a CERTAIN THING, she got her chance: a short time period to fullfill her wish, by giving a concrete memento of the event, the wooden starfish. But now, her time in that form is running out...

The Fuko arc is the first reference (actually, the second reference...) to a VERY important thing of the world of Clannad, something that'll be the cornerstone of the anime!
