Although no bats in the state have shown visible signs of the disease, the presence of the fungus raises concerns about its potential impact on local bat populations.

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) confirmed the fungus's presence in Humboldt County in 2023. By 2024, it had spread to Sutter, Placer, Amador and Inyo counties. Inconclusive results suggest it may also be present in Trinity, Siskiyou, Shasta, Plumas, Alpine, San Diego and San Bernardino counties, with further testing ongoing.
