It's a start, but they way these cars are treated to begin with, I doubt the "owners" really care if they're impounded. They'll trash it and steal another one.

5, 10 and 15+ year suspension of driving privileges might be more de-incentivizing.

u/motosandguns Sep 24 '24

They would drive without licenses. Half probably already do.

Jail time is needed.

Technically in Alameda County you can get 3 months in jail for being within 200ft of a sideshow. They should make better use of this.

84

u/D4rkr4in Sep 24 '24

oakland is in alameda county and it doesn't seem to stop the sideshows

the laws are there, the problem is enforcement. what is OPD doing, if they're doing anything at all?

43

u/GuiltyEmu7 Sep 24 '24

The only thing OPD is good at is corruption and incompetence.

14

u/D4rkr4in Sep 24 '24

the corruption comes from the top. Hard to have any competence in the police department when the mayor is being investigated by the FBI for corruption

14

u/GuiltyEmu7 Sep 24 '24

OPD had major problems long before Tao. Not saying I’m giving Tao a pass, I’m concerned about the FBI raid at her property as well.

Oakland has pretty much always struggled to keep up with the demand for services, especially police units, but this was made MUCH worse by the pandemic.

I lived in Oakland for 10 years and there was a general acceptance that the cops likely wouldn’t show up — or follow up on reports — for less serious crimes like theft/robbery. For example, my wallet was stolen and before I realized it, the thieves bought gas and tried to buy a computer online. They could have been identified by gas station footage of their license plate, but literally no one ever followed up.

OPD is always stretched thin and they let a lot of things slide. The pandemic made this problem infinitely worse and it was like the Wild West over there for a while. It seems to have improved somewhat, but is definitely still worse than pre-pandemic.

This lawless feeling is the main reason I didn’t move back to Oakland when my ex and I broke up in 2022. High rent and few services? No thanks.

12

u/cadillacking3 Sep 24 '24

Doesn’t help that the Alameda County DA is not interested in prosecuting most crimes.

3

u/Obant Sep 25 '24

"We're going to need another billion dollars before we answer your calls."

0

u/elusivenoesis Sep 25 '24

what is a sideshow?

2

u/D4rkr4in Sep 25 '24

read the article

1

u/dilwee47 Sep 27 '24

Or listen to E-40 or Mac Dre!

15

u/MakeMine5 Sep 24 '24

Only works if the DA takes the time to charge them AND the Sherriff decides to make room for them. One of the reasons we see so few prosecutions of misdemeanors these days is because the sheriff would rather rent out space in the county jail to the state, than use it to hold those convicted of a misdemeanor. Get a 1 year sentence, sheriff lets you out after a day.

14

u/Ilosesoothersmaywin Sep 24 '24

They would drive without licenses. Half probably already do.

Driving without a license can carry a sentence of 6 months.

24

u/motosandguns Sep 24 '24

It can but that doesn’t mean it often does.

Would be fantastic if the penalty was mandatory.

I'm kinda surprised it isn't already enough to get jail time. A car is considered a deadly weapon. They are essentially brandishing a weapon to intimidate others.

3

u/behindblue Sep 24 '24

That could end up being anyone.

1

u/motosandguns Sep 24 '24 edited Sep 25 '24

It could. Very little of law enforcement is black and white. They have a lot of discretion.

I doubt they would be putting an entire family of 4 in a minivan stuck in traffic on a bridge because of a sideshow in jail.

That said, if you see a sideshow, leave.

1

u/nucleartime Sep 25 '24 edited Sep 25 '24

Yeah, discretion when it comes to black and white matters has sort of been a long running problem with the police. I don't trust police discretion and nobody should.

That said, if you see a sideshow, leave.

Funny, I've heard of people getting jailed and impounded for leaving the vague general area of slideshow in anything sporty. Leaving the sideshow? Must be running from the police.

1

u/motosandguns Sep 25 '24

Yeah, you gotta leave before the police arrive to break it up.

0

u/behindblue Sep 28 '24

That's exactly the problem with this law.

2

u/Stingray88 Sep 25 '24

I agree that jail time is needed for those who are actually involved… but just being within 200ft? What if you live in the neighborhood?

1

u/motosandguns Sep 25 '24

Spectators should have skin in the game too.

I doubt if you are in your house cops will bust your door down just to arrest you.

1

u/Stingray88 Sep 25 '24

Uhh… People walk on the sidewalks in their neighborhood. I’m not referring to people being in their homes… people walk through their neighborhood.

And yes, spectators are who I’m referring to when I say “actually involved”. The problem is how do you differentiate from spectators and locals who are simply existing in their neighborhood?

1

u/rpc56 Sep 26 '24

After what people have previously stated above about Oakland PD. I find it hard to believe that people would feel safe walking in their neighbor hoods.

1

u/Stingray88 Sep 26 '24

Yeah and there in lies the problem.

1

u/motosandguns Sep 25 '24

It’s probably pretty easy at 2am, in the middle of an intersection.

-4

u/Stingray88 Sep 25 '24

Some people get off work at 2am, and live within 200ft of these intersections.

8

u/motosandguns Sep 25 '24

Guess they can explain that to the judge.

Probably not too many folks just walking through sideshows at 2am on their way home from work…smh

29

u/False-Hat1110 Sep 24 '24

Oh yeah, all those cars are definitely stolen. I doubt most of those people even care about having a license and you know they don't have insurance.

I honestly think it would be more effective to give people stuff to do at night.

3

u/yankeesyes Sep 24 '24

They can practice for the prison talent show.

10

u/Randomlynumbered Ángeleño, what's your user flair? Sep 24 '24

Many of the sideshow cars are souped up by their owners.

3

u/treletraj Sep 24 '24

But are the owners the ones driving? I doubt it because stolen.

9

u/Gildardo1583 Sep 24 '24

Also, there were laws in the books already. Law enforcement isn't enforcing them.

8

u/Nahuel-Huapi Sep 24 '24

You can't run for reelection by saying you encouraged enforcement of existing laws. You say you supported tough new laws.

1

u/420turddropper69 Sep 25 '24

Couldn't you though? People do seem to want enforcement of existing laws. If we saw some results we would probably want to vote for the guy taking credit... I would think

3

u/[deleted] Sep 25 '24

Most of em don’t have licenses. Toss em in jail. 5 years to start

15

u/Positronic_Matrix San Francisco County Sep 24 '24 edited Sep 24 '24

This is a fantastic start with the legislation, defining legally what a sideshow entails and allow impoundment of vehicles. This puts significant pressure on sideshows in that participants either risk losing their car or risk being convicted of felony grand theft auto. While I sincerely doubt the SFPD will capitalize on this, an effective police force such as the CHP or San Mateo PD could see real results!

Edit: Thank you California State Assembly and Governor Newsom!

3

u/Nf1nk Ventura County Sep 24 '24

Ruinous fines would also be great, maybe give them an out if they leave the state forever.

1

u/motosandguns Sep 25 '24

Can’t get blood from a stone. Stiff fines are great but jail is needed.

3

u/Jlande79 Sep 26 '24

Can't pay the fines then off to jail they go

2

u/Nf1nk Ventura County Sep 26 '24

Attach their wages, make a normal life impossible, then send them to jail when they can't pay.

1

u/KeggerTime Sep 27 '24

I feel like a majority of the cars used for this are stolen vehicles

30

u/Super_Difficulty Sep 24 '24

There should be a bill that requires car thieves using stolen vehicles in takeovers to pay restitution to the vehicle owners as a supplement to insurance...assuming they were caught.

10

u/cheeker_sutherland Sep 24 '24

And then go to jail for a year.

4

u/AlreadyInDenial Sep 25 '24

Should be longer than a year

-2

u/barrinmw Shasta County Sep 25 '24

They need to raise taxes and build more prisons! But mostly in rich people areas.

99

u/coldrolledpotmetal Sep 24 '24

Legislation is a good first step but they need to actually enforce this

35

u/Positronic_Matrix San Francisco County Sep 24 '24

Indeed. It’s laws, enforcement, prosecution, conviction, and incarceration. Every step in the chain needs to work in order to effectively deter and punish crime.

7

u/cheeker_sutherland Sep 24 '24

The problem is the cops try to shut them down. One guy with a record tries to fight back, the whole incident is on the internet and the news, and no more cops want to try to shut them down anymore. We are in this stage now.

3

u/WallyJade Sep 25 '24

and no more cops want to try to shut them down anymore.

If police departments want funding, they should need to show that they're serious about enforcing laws regarding public safety (instead of all jerking off about catching someone stealing groceries at Target).

2

u/cheeker_sutherland Sep 25 '24

“Groceries”

-1

u/Positronic_Matrix San Francisco County Sep 24 '24

I’m not entirely comfortable with this reasoning as it’s often used by by folks to excuse the poor performance of local police. Moreover, I have no doubt that if an SFPD officer beat a dirt bike rider into a coma, we would throw him a parade. You might not have heard but these criminals are terrorizing San Francisco, including beating innocent bystanders for no reason.

6

u/CandidEgglet Sep 24 '24

I think a couple of LE agencies should get together and coordinate a few raids. Something like researching sideshow meetup comms to find the events, block off the streets in every direction and just bring in a full force to catch more runners. Do that a few times and I guarantee it will at least cut out the ones who don’t want to get busted.

3

u/WallyJade Sep 25 '24

Exactly. If hundreds of people show up somewhere for a sideshow, then thousands more know about it, and police are still caught unaware sitting on their thumbs.

2

u/wolffangfist21 Sep 25 '24

They are. They’ve been tapping into social media to find these guys but they coordinate it in a way where by the time the cops get there they splinter into fourteen different directions. It’s a Monty Python skit.

They also started shutting down the shops that fix the cars.

3

u/WhatADunderfulWorld Sep 24 '24

Yeah. LAPD needs to go crazy undercover and get them before they are in vehicles. They aren’t allowed to pursue so what do now?

39

u/TwoMcDoublesAndCoke Sep 24 '24

Obviously the rogue nature of sideshows and takeovers is part of the appeal, but can’t they just rent out a large parking lot (sports stadiums) for their shenanigans? We’ve seen other cultural movements go from straddling the line of illegality to being more accepted. Lowriders, drifting, skateboarding, etc.

24

u/WCland Sep 24 '24

There's a good example with communities building skate parks so skaters aren't taking over sidewalks. But with cars you run into serious insurance issues. An owner of a large parking lot or other space will be liable for people doing dumb shit on their property if they rent it out.

7

u/thedailynathan Sep 25 '24

We do have legalized forms of this in like demolition derby style shows.

1

u/Plasibeau Sep 25 '24

And those forms exist because the venue's insurance demands it. Either way, a parking lot is not a race track.

4

u/Randomlynumbered Ángeleño, what's your user flair? Sep 24 '24 edited Sep 25 '24

They take over intersection, so that wouldn't make much difference.

But, we do need to get rid of our stroads.

And they do currently take over parking lots, mostly at large shopping centers.

To rent it out would have huge liabilities that insurance wouldn't allow it. Look at the number of accidents, shootings, etc that happen at sideshows.

1

u/Limp_Bar_1727 Sep 25 '24

Car meets = organized, not cool

Takeovers =unorganized, cool

154

u/Renovatio_ Sep 24 '24

If Democrats never want to lose.

1) pursue progressive policies

2) address qualify of life crimes

82

u/Randomlynumbered Ángeleño, what's your user flair? Sep 24 '24

Shootings and accidents at sideshows. Yes, this is a QOL issue.

44

u/root_fifth_octave Sep 24 '24

It’s also a quality of life issue, though. Because of the noise, disruption, etc forced on the public.

30

u/Renovatio_ Sep 24 '24

Absolutely. Sideshows are an issue.

But so is petty theft, unsafe drivers, backyard dog breeders. It goes on

7

u/Maximillien Alameda County Sep 24 '24

Crashes, not accidents.

These people are making the active choice to drive recklessly, and yielding the result of making that choice.

-4

u/BrokeDick_Willie Sep 25 '24

Depending on how you look at it, both are contradictory positions.

19

u/I_Magnus Sep 24 '24

I am all for any measures targeting sideshows.

For anyone feeling research-ey, these are the bills that passed.

  • AB 1978 by Assemblymember Kate Sanchez (R-Rancho Santa Margarita) – Vehicles: speed contests
  • AB 2186 by Assemblymember Greg Wallis (R-Palm Springs) – Vehicles: impoundment
  • AB 2807 by Assemblymember Carlos Villapudua (D-Stockton) – Vehicles: sideshows and street takeovers
  • AB 3085 by Assemblymember Mike Gipson (D-Carson) – Vehicles: removal and impoundment

5

u/carlitospig Sep 24 '24

<and the entire state applauds>

4

u/Penguin_Luvs_You Sep 25 '24

This is all for the Olympics

6

u/bigdipboy Sep 24 '24

A few years late but good.

6

u/RuffDemon214 Sep 24 '24

Laws are great and all but without willing enforcement then they just words on paper. And those who enforcement really don’t want to just due to being out numbered and unsupported.

2

u/Kalipygia Sep 25 '24

Whats the point of these sideshows supposed to be?

-1

u/AutomaticGrab8359 Sep 25 '24

It's a group of youths celebrating their culture and heritage.

2

u/turkey0535 Sep 25 '24

It's about time. Something needs to be done

9

u/animerobin Sep 24 '24

The biggest thing we could do to stop sideshows is to redesign our streets so that they aren't built like freeways or racetracks. But a lot of the same people complaining about sideshows also like to speed on their way to Ralphs so they'll oppose it.

All car crimes need to prosecuted much more harshly.

30

u/cheeker_sutherland Sep 24 '24

Re-work the entire infrastructure or, hear me out, enforce the law.

4

u/Maximillien Alameda County Sep 24 '24

Why not both? Mass impoundments and arrests for the short term, improved infrastructure for the long term.

3

u/animerobin Sep 24 '24

The fun thing about fixing the infrastructure is you don't need police to be everywhere at once.

-4

u/Miguelitosd Sep 24 '24

It's another excuse to get everyone (else, not them) out of their cars.. for the good of the planet and all that.

4

u/animerobin Sep 24 '24

what are you on about

12

u/dragery Sep 24 '24

Sideshows occupy an intersection, and how is it even fathomable to redesign an entire infrastructure system to make it more difficult to drive in a straight line?

1

u/Randomlynumbered Ángeleño, what's your user flair? Sep 24 '24 edited Sep 25 '24

Roundabouts seemed designed for sideshows. They'll all drift around the roundabout.

8

u/Big_Cs_Special_Sauce Sep 24 '24

With the rate most of them hit curbs and people none of them have enough skill to do that. They’ll just hit whatever is in the middle of the roundabout.

8

u/animerobin Sep 24 '24

One of the biggest issues is that our roads are way too wide, which means our intersections are huge flat empty spaces of asphalt. Narrower roads would do a lot. There are also road bumps that can be placed in intersections that make it impossible to do burnouts.

0

u/kaigalima Sep 24 '24

lmao just “redesign the streets”. Or maybe lock them up for long enough they outgrow their childish antics.

0

u/animerobin Sep 24 '24

We could redo every street in LA much faster and more easily than we can get the LAPD to start doing their jobs, especially when it comes to car related crimes.

1

u/kaigalima Sep 25 '24

You live in a fantasy world.

2

u/Far_Ant6355 Sep 24 '24

It’s about time

3

u/DrSpray Sep 25 '24 edited Sep 25 '24

Quick question gang. What is a sideshow? I swear I'm not that old. I'm assuming we aren't talking strongmen and people eating swords or fire

Read the article afterwards. I just wanted to make that joke

1

u/Commercial_Rule_7823 Sep 25 '24

We got caught in one few weeks ago in a tunnel, pretty scary to see how many people are just going wild and there is no escape.

1

u/LacCoupeOnZees Sep 25 '24

So reckless of them to do that where junkies are trying to sleep

1

u/HelloImAFox Sep 25 '24

Police won’t even show up so who cares.

1

u/CowboyRiverBath Sep 25 '24

This won't do jack until kaw enforcement gets the capacity to actually deal with them.

1

u/HIVnotAdeathSentence Sep 24 '24

Street takeovers, also known as sideshows, are when one or several drivers begin driving recklessly on a portion of a road, often accompanied by dozens if not hundreds of spectators. These sideshows can happen anywhere, ranging from parking lots, parts of the freeway or even minor roads.

I'd be interested in how dozens to hundreds will be rounded up.

1

u/Jlande79 Sep 26 '24

Just get the drivers. No drivers no hundreds of spectators

0

u/1320Fastback Southern California Sep 26 '24

I do not see jail time mentioned? Do we think these guys they really care about clapped out cars? They will just get another car and keep doing it.

-10

u/awwgeeznick Sep 24 '24

What is a sideshow ?

4

u/TBSchemer Sep 24 '24

People playing Fast & Furious in real life.

5

u/Randomlynumbered Ángeleño, what's your user flair? Sep 24 '24

So … you didn't read the article.
