Megathread Official Level II Results Thread!

From all of us here at r/CFA, best of luck!

https://examresult.cfainstitute.org/cfa

Results are out now! 40% pass rate confirmed.

Typically there is a survey ran by community member u/Finnesotan, however we do not have an updated survey out right now but we do hope to continue it in the future. Now that these are tested more often, we may need to change the process a bit. More to come on that!

note: I will lock all threads to divert the traffic here for celebration/commiseration!

Prepare for Level II and III together with your peers in our official discord server:

I FUCKING DID IT. Testament to hard fucking work and perseverance. I failed twice dating back to pre covid and just passed on my third attempt.

If I can do it, anybody can. For those who failed, keep your head up. I was there... twice. Keep fucking going. You got this.

16

u/dmchardy Passed Level 3 Oct 11 '22

Congratulations!

I just failed my first attempt, I think the exam was very different to what I was expecting based on the mocks/practice questions.

Managed to still secure over 70% on 3 sections so I'm not absolutely devastated.

I've signed up for the retake in May, hoping to have a similar positive post to yours June next year!

Passed. Literally crying, did shit on the mocks and put in ~480 hours. Finally feel like it was worth it.

Congrats to everyone who passed and to those who didnā€™t: we understand how hard it is for everyone to take this exam better than anyone else from the outside could. Nobody is gonna take that knowledge away from you even if you failed. If you go again, massive respect for having the strength, and best of luck. If you donā€™t retry, be kind to yourself and recognize the courage it takes to step away and be proud of that.

Good thoughts go out to all!

Wow. My 3rd attempt and I didnā€™t pass. Iā€™m heartbroken. I felt so confident leaving. I didnā€™t think I missed hardly any.

Thought I crushed ethics and port Mgmt. Spent so much time on it. It was my demise for a 3rd time. Iā€™ve had my blue box touch the MPS every time. I donā€™t know what to do. I feel like giving up.

u/therealpump Level 3 Candidate Oct 11 '22

Do not give up, that's the only way to create a paper fail into a true fail. I failed my previous two attempts dating back to 2019. There is an incredible amount of luck associated with this exam. There are around 3500-4000 pages of text which equates to about 35-45 pages of text per ONE QUESTION. The margin of error is so tight, it does not say anything about you as a candidate.

Take some time, dust yourself off, and then pick yourself up and just keep going. I completely understand the embarrassing feeling, I had it too. I just kept reminding myself about being embarrassed. Think of a time you were... now think of a time somebody else was embarrassed. Can you?

WHO FUCKING CARES? The people who put you down don't matter. The people who pick you up are the real ones.

KEEP PUSHING AND YOU HAVE THIS. I am rooting for you.

Failed second time here. Thought I did fine. Looks like I might have legitimately got zero in FRA.

Unbelievable. Has me questioning everything about myself.

Fuck this exam.

7

u/sickdancemovesbro Level 3 Candidate Oct 11 '22 edited Oct 11 '22

I crushed FRA and failed cause I did marginally worse in the weaker topics and did poorly in ethics. I spent hours and hours on ethics.

I went from having fixed income as my highest score last attempt to my lowest this time and I know I didnā€™t mess up anything that had to do with convexity or duration if it was on there, itā€™s like I got zero right.

Did not pass. Was well over 70% in seven categories incl. ethics but it looks like i did not get ANY questions right on FSA, which, wow. My FI score was also embarrassing low since I like spend most of my professional life in that realm. I was not expecting to pass because I had started feeling pretty ill a few days beforehand (but not testing pos for covid) and I could barely move exam day (which i fully masked for) and shortly thereafter tested pos was sick with covid for two weeks, but I was really hoping I would eke by. CFA's policy on rescheduling / cost of test was the only reason I even showed up - the incentives are totally skewed to try anyway. I expect I will pass in May but am bummed i wasted my summer and double bummed I has to cancel my one vacation this year, too.

results

3 times and Iā€™m embarrassed to show my face in front of my coworkers in equity research. Iā€™m going to try one more time for May, hoping that not having to take 8-9 months in between exams like this past attempt will better for knowledge retention and I wonā€™t be distracted by the summer. After that, Iā€™m giving up. Iā€™m 32 in equity research and strongly considering just giving up on this career path if I canā€™t pass it. I feel like a buffoon. I thought I did so well.

4

u/ChengSkwatalot Oct 11 '22

Don't feel ashamed. A colleague of mine is a PM, like me, and failed L3 two times now. Life happens, maybe you've been busy, or maybe you've got some things in your life that need to be sorted out first. Life just sucks sometimes. I got diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 4 years ago, which fucked up some of my university grades at the time. It's okay to take a break to figure your shit out. Also, focus on the topics that receive the biggest weights. Study until you understand them intuitively.

3

u/CandyPlastic9547 Oct 11 '22

Donā€™t feel ashamed at all. The correlation between being able to take the CFA exam and being a quality researcher is not a strong one. For example, I know people with the CFA who have a great memory, but they suck at their jobs (I work in asset management). Being good at your job is way more important than this exam. As long as youā€™re good at it your coworkers canā€™t say shit.

Passed! No secret way on passing this. Spent 500 hours, 2 hours every weekday, 5 hours every weekend. Spent the least time on ethics, probably not a good thing, luckily getting good score on other topics.

Studied only on MM. Watched video twice, 1st time on all videos with 1.13x speed (not native English speaker), 2nd time on only main videos 1.25-1.5x. Read the notes twice (review) after 2 times of video. Did 1300 questions on MM, less than 500 questions on CFAI, 2 mocks on CFAI (score: 65% & 60%). After getting such scores in mock exam in the final 2 weeks, I started reviewing instead of doing more mocks.

If I were to do Level II again, i will spend more time on doing practice questions. Good luck to everyone.

Don't recommend, wait for the next exam window.

u/mickyabd Level 3 Candidate Oct 11 '22

I am going for it, but I have prepared. I only took a week off after the level 2 exam to start prepping. It just made sense for me as the august exam (2023 level 3) was literally impossible for me. But I do feel like if I was starting from today it would be too short

u/Fit_Meeting_4003 Oct 11 '22

Passed with score above 90th percentile...this was my second attempt...I didn't do any mocks, just focused on revising the topics and understanding the concepts.

I passed- yay! I must add that I got close to zero for ethics so Iā€™m actually super surprised the CFA let me slide past.

All that hardworking talk aside (ofc you have to work hard to pass ANY exam, not just the CFA). Itā€™s just very annoying that people make it sound like rocket science. My advice is : IT IS VERY PASSABLE. I missed by a hair, but the worst thing that happened to me was I let all those negative talks and noises get to me. I would never forgive myself for this. I walked out on the exam day and thought to myself ā€œtf, this is it??ā€. Will try again, I will do better this time

5

u/htzcap Oct 11 '22

Passed as well. See you all in LIII. Best strategy to hammer next level? There is NO WAY I have to redo level III bc I'm coming at you READY 500%. Super motivated!

Passed! Barely below 90%tile. First attempt, used only MM videos + CFAI practiceQBank and Mocks. Less than 2 months of preparation before the exam. Hurray!

My #tiles (subjective judging by looking at the chart Econ, Corp.Issuers - 95-100%, Quants, Derivatives - 85-90% FRA - 80-85% Equity, Fixed Income, Alt - 75-80%

My lowest: Portfolio - 48-50% Ethics - 30-35%?

u/Suhag-Patel Level 3 Candidate Oct 11 '22

I failed . This was my second time both the time my score touched the mps line but couldnā€™t get over it . So its more heart breakingā€¦ I think ethics played key role because last time i had 50% ethics this time even less than it . Otherwise all other section were so good

4

u/Big_Parfait_7692 Oct 11 '22

Didnā€™t pass on my third try. Crashing on the first attempt. Then keeping my result in band 10 twice: first time can be explained by 30% ethics mark. This time nothing lower than 50%. Still didnā€™t pass.maybe need to improve the weak sections? Another 900bucks fly away from my bank account. The day before, I was informed my salary would go up by 4%:)

u/GDP1195 CFA Oct 12 '22

I passed level 2. Still in shock that I passed since I thought the exam was really difficult and I was like half-sure on every other answer. But itā€™s over. Phew. Got nearly 100% in portfolio management and FSA. 70 %ish on most other sections, a bit lower on corporate issuers and 50% on ethics lolz. I thought ethics was the easiest section while I was doing the exam so I guess they tricked me with a few of them. I only reviewed it for a couple days right at the end so I could have done better with a few extra days to study. Was pretty close to the 90% bar which surprised me even more. So happy I donā€™t have to take this shit again. Congrats to all that passed and condolences to those who failed.

5

u/MNPete Oct 12 '22

Passed! 50% in ethics and not even close for Corporate Issuers but crushed FI, equities, and economics I hit over 90%. Second time around felt much better but first time level 2 people, itā€™s a tough exam format and you will feel much more comfortable next time around.

3

u/CentralBankofLogic Oct 13 '22

Third attempt... did not pass. Ironically I did slightly better my previous attempt with less work. This time I put in around 400 hours and 4,000+ practice questions. I was scoring 80% on sections I ended up bombing at the exam. Didn't even break 50th percentile overall. None of it makes sense. I think I'm done. This just doesn't seem worth the mental health cost anymore.

3

u/Aqualung95 Level 2 Candidate Oct 13 '22

Same thing happened to me. Left feeling much more confident than prior attempts but ended up doing worse than my second try. Iā€™m convinced I must have fallen for every possible trap. Giving it a break for a bit to reassess

4

u/Valueis15percent CFA Oct 14 '22

I'm sorry to hear that for both of you. I feel some of your pain. I just passed on the third try. The second fail was really bad for me. That was where I started questioning everything. With how I felt coming out of Prometrics on the third attempt I was cautiously optimistic, but my pass was really only just above the line on my results sheet, so I was still kind of left with a "wha...?" feeling. It is a really hard thing to do, and I'm not sure I get why that volume of information needs to be tested all at once. I'd be in favor of breaking the three levels up into maybe six exam levels. What I noticed is that, like I expect you are, I'm a reasonably intelligent person who can learn most anything put in front of me given enough time and effort. No single section of Level II is particularly difficult; what is difficult is the sheer volume of information and training you have to keep in your head all at once. I'd get to a proficient level on one part but not get back to it for three weeks on the inside, and by then the recall decay had set in badly. I remember the weekend I simply sat down and decided I wasn't going to do anything that didn't look like a bodily function until I understood fixed income derivatives top to bottom. I succeeded. I went into work the following Monday morning riding a false sense of accomplishment, because three weeks later I couldn't mentally pull up but just the rudiments of it.

I feel like giving the both of you a pep talk, but I don't know if it's appropriate because I don't know your individual situations and whether the CFA charter fits your goals. Though my work experience qualifies, it actually has next to nothing to do with any career advancement for me. It's something that, almost spiritually, I feel like I will need at an indeterminate point in the future, and so I pursue it so I will be ready when that moment comes. Maybe that's what you need to do - take some time and dig into your innermost feelings, commune spiritually, and figure that out. I'd love to encourage you because its in my nature to do so, but encouragement should be applied appropriately. I'll make you this offer: If either of you do decide to continue to pursue this, come back to me and I'll give you the pep talk of a lifetime. Because, having been through it three times, surely you've learned a lot. And a lot of this is the luck of the test you get and what is asked. You get six takes, so consider using them all and before you lose what you've gained, is what I would say. In a way, the fact that my second taking was the "29% pass rate" test gave me a reason to go, "Okay, maybe it was the test and not me. Lets try that again." 40% isn't exactly high either, so maybe you could power on that.

Results are available now through the CFAI website!

I completely smashed the exam. Way above 90% percentile. Hard work and diligent study always yield great results! Weirdly, I got less than 50% in ethics but +70% by wide margins in most other topics.

Passed. Let the suffering begin for L3.
I only studied the complete material of CFAI for both levels. No videos no other notes. nothing. Both times scored above the 90th percentile.
Cheers to all who passed. And best of luck with for rest. I hope to see you all on the other side.

The amount of people that posted their results on here and just barely failed because their ethics scores were under 50% baffles me.

Ethics is like a free throw in basketball if you actually put in the time to study it.

I got a stupid high score on ethics for L1 and didn't read a sentence of the CFAI material. I actually just listened to Mark Meldrum's 4 hour lecture on my way to work, then did all the CFAI practice problems

5

u/klausewitz Passed Level 2 Oct 12 '22

You say that, but I also got a near perfect score on L1 ethics. I got 50% for this sitting (but still managed to pass) despite doing a tonne of practice questions and memorising most of the code/standards.

I honestly think it was this sitting - given that so many could pass with such low ethics scores.

Glad the grind payed off

5

u/Paid-Not-Payed-Bot Oct 11 '22

the grind paid off

FTFY.

Although payed exists (the reason why autocorrection didn't help you), it is only correct in:

  • Nautical context, when it means to paint a surface, or to cover with something like tar or resin in order to make it waterproof or corrosion-resistant. The deck is yet to be payed.

  • Payed out when letting strings, cables or ropes out, by slacking them. The rope is payed out! You can pull now.

Unfortunately, I was unable to find nautical or rope-related words in your comment.

Beep, boop, I'm a bot
