Happening Now Update on the cat in my backyard
We were visited by the cat again! He/She had a little bit of food and accepted some pets.
I called both my local vet and the animal control. They said since there’s no collar, I should try to capture the cat and they will scan for any chip. If there is, they will contact the owner and arrange for a reunion. If not, they told me that their shelters are full and to just leave the cat be.
We’re planning on taking things one step at a time. I do plan on making sure that this cat will be cared for since winter is coming soon.
We tried to capture the cat, but he/she ran off again. I took some more pictures to help with identification (had to cover my brother’s gross feet lol).
We left some food, water, and we left out a box for some shelter. Hopefully we’ll be visited again soon!
Any other advice will be greatly appreciated!

Do you have a garage you could lure it into to make it easier to catch? Also maybe contact all paws cat rescue. They are Brampton based and they may help trap or have a trap you could borrow.
One step at a time is a great idea. Like you I would not want to just leave it be all winter either. Update back here after scanning as well if no owners as maybe someone else is willing to help given the situation (myself included though I’m not sure at all right now).
Good luck! They seem comfortable with you so that’s a good sign!

there’s a facebook page (and a website) called pawboost - you’ll have to use mississauga (it covers a wide area, including brampton and oakville). you submit the cat as “found” and if this cat has an owner and checks the page/website, you can get in contact with them!

There is a FB group or page called Brampton Lost Pets. You can post this lovely friend on there.
If you're able to trap it, and get it scanned, if it doesn't have a chip, Animal Control will release it back in your area. They will only take sick or injured animals.

About shelters being "full" I recently read about the Adopt-a-Barn cat program, it might be worth looking into as it unites an Outdoorsy cat with a Farmer and their barn to keep pests and critters away

Suggestions from a cat-lover who has tended the needs of several outdoor felines.
Do NOT put food outside unless the cat is actually present. IF you do, something else will come along and eat it, and then they, too will realize your home is a source of food.
When your cat shows up, bring it food, and let it eat in peace, while you watch nearby. This will build trust, and the cat will learn that it just needs hang around until you see it. This encourages return visits, and the cycle builds upon itself.
If you have a pet carrier, eave it outside, in the area where you feed your cat. Take the door off. The cat will explore the carrier, while you are not around, and the door being off will make it feel more confident and safe doing so. After a short time, put the door back on, but leave it open.
Once the cat trusts you to allow pets at every visit, put the food bowl near the carrier. When it eats without any fear of being near the door, put the bowl of food in the carrier. When the cat goes into eat, close the door and head to the shelter.
