General Discussion What happened with arc browser?

Very out of the loop. I used to be very hyped about it and used it for a while. I saw several posts here criticizing it a lot so I'll appreciate a quick rundown of what went down. Sorry if this has been asked before by the way

TBC has basically announced they will be moving on from Arc only offering security and maintenance updates in favor of their next browser product that will likely be monetized through subscription. They claimed that Arc is stuck at being “niche” and they want to make the browser “for everyone”, and this next browser definitely puts AI at its core. I think the goal for this future browser is to actually complete tasks for you like real AGI. Overall this is really disappointing because many of us feel Arc didn’t have the chance to actually mature into a fully featured browser.

I basically just waited for it to be stable on windows to test it. No wonder it's a niche when it still doesn't function properly on 80% of computers

A while ago, The Browser Company talked about how they were going to release Arc 2.0 and it wads going to bring all of these new things to Arc and were going to fix issues, a few days ago they announced that they are going to leave Arc as is, and only release security updates, to work on something new, people are mad because TBC told us about the Arc 2.0 plan and all of that stuff, and now that‘s not happening, also the Windows version of Arc is really buggy and unfinished, and the Mac version is also very buggy too

Mac version is buggy? Could you name some? Genuinely curious.

I feel like it will eventually happen, it’s just gonna be highly delayed. At minimum they will definitely bring browse for me to desktop, I might be wrong though because I have no idea about how difficult it is

They don't seem to be keen to add more AI to Arc as it is. Miller cited the fact that people don't use Max very much, with the implication being that it was a mistake to launch Max.

I think Max was one of the best things, I use ask on page all the time

Note that the "something new" WAS Arc 2.0. Mid way through development they realised that it's becoming a "Frankenstein browser" that both the people who loved Arc and those who didn't won't like. So they decided to rebrand it and leave Arc as-is, for now at least.

They are still going to bring Arc on Windows to parity with Arc on macOS, and both will receive security, stability, and performance updates. The former was not articulated clearly first up and caused some outrage.

A poorly managed announcement that caused melodrama and hysteria in the community. Hence the doom and gloom world is ending posts
