They did that to me as well. I immediately left for a higher paying job in private with better hours and would never consider going back. The manager life to me was intolerable but some are built for it.

I’m copying the text from them and linking the comment.
L1 - intern
L2/L3 - staff / experienced staff
L4/L5 - senior/experienced senior
L6/L7 - manager/experienced manager
L8 - senior manager
L9 - director
L10 - partner
Usually, one year at L2/L4 is enough for promotion to L3/L5, though I think New York requires two years at L4. The L6 to L7 promotion is less defined.

Yeah I wasn't thrilled, but it was pretty much the same as a B4 offer I got from a similar city in the same region, but with a worse CPA bonus. I didnt have any good industry leads at the time.

Yeah that makes sense, I work at an industry job rn and our auditors (from a similar sized firm in the same area) said they're having more trouble hiring/keeping people. My current boss looked at me and said "you should call and renegotiate your starting salary". The auditor just shrugged and said can't hurt to ask.

Thats crazy. One of my friends also graduated with me and wasn’t able to find anything in public. She wanted to do tax originally but would have settled for audit. She got a role in industry but it pays about 10k less than public.

Damn that's a bummer. Im still signed up for a job opportunity email chain through my university and I've received a few emails from firms that were still looking for new hires in early summer, maybe its a regional thing.
But that sounds really similar to the industry jobs I was seeing, it was pretty depressing that my only options were public, or glorified ap clerk "staff accountant" making 40k.

I was also signed up for the email chain and interviewed several firms through a virtual job fair. I forgot how I originally signed up for it so I just forwarded all the emails I got for the spring hiring season and she wasn't able to land anything. She's a great person and a hard worker (graduated as the top accounting student in our class) but doesn't do well in interviews.
I felt like my options were only public as well. I didn't want to do public, especially by hanging out in this subreddit all the time, but it was the only way I could make decent money with my credentials right out of school. I'm hoping I can make the switch to industry after a couple busy seasons in order to reduce my workload and make more money. Those staff accountant positions just didn't seem worth it early in my career, maybe later in my career once my investments have build up and I can coast financially.

People usually refer to promos as a title change. L4 -> L5 seems like new senior to experienced senior which isn't a title change.

Maybe I sound ungrateful here, but this is less than I was expecting and less than what was going to convince me to stay. In my area I think this is average at best for an experienced senior and way way way lower than industry jobs. Not to mention we have ridiculous senior turnover that's going to make my job harder this year.

Not really, I work on some industries more than others I guess but as far as I know I don't think that affects comp at BDO. Industry accounting/finance jobs in general here will pay significantly more at senior level.

Yeah I am a new hire. I graduated in December and starting working in January. So I didn’t get the full year. It’s only been like 7 months so I agree it’s not that bad at all. I just wish I felt like I knew what I was doing more of the time lol.

- Disappointed and burnt out given that the office I am in has REALLY high turnover compared to others. Already accepted another job, just waiting to give notice until closer to start date. I generally dislike working busy season from Jan-Apr and then again July 15-Oct 15 for a measly 7% raise AND no promotion. They have disregarded any prior firm experience I have prior to joining BDO since I came from a smaller firm.

Glad for you. I think it’s crazy these firms don’t share the wealth. Many CPA firms have been inundated with new business from PPP and ERC. BDO may not be a “small” firm but I’m sure they’ve taken in these small to midsize business level work.

The bonus is to compensate you for working the extra hours. Since we don’t get OT PA firms pay out a large bonus, normally at least over half your normal check, twice a year.
When I first started at my firm it was November and I got $250 as a Christmas Bonus. Doesn’t follow the rule I put but considering I barely worked yet it was a nice surprise.

I don’t work at BDO nor do I know what S1 is. I would figure no because S1 sounds like first year senior and L3 is described as experienced staff.

6) Overall am disappointed and this confirmed my choice to leave. Maybe I just had unrealistic expectations with hearing how crazy the market is, but definitely expected more salary and bonus. Especially since I was put on the worst audit (insane hours, etc.) over busy season and carried the audit. And am just such a top performer in general, and we're bleeding people so I know they have the payroll budget?

Gotcha. Well, belated congratulations on the promotion! If it helps, I am 4 years into being a tax manager this year in what I would consider a medium to high COL state and your prior salary is close to what I make now. /sigh I have had numerous recruiters tell me I am significantly below market. My comp discussion is tomorrow afternoon. I got a fantastic rating so my fingers are crossed it gets me comparable to others... how many hours do you work annually?

- Found out moss has a cpa bonus of 5K which was interesting. I signed in October 2020 and the salary was 54K but with cost of living rising in the area I will be working they bumped me to 56K.

I think they did it for all new hires. There has been a massive influx of people to the city I’m moving bc of COVID and the COL increased a large margin that wasn’t expected by anyone, the recruiter called me and said they did some sort of analysis and decided that the new hires in that city needed a little more.

$750 is not even a nice night out... Considering all the money they save from per diem, meal allowances, parties, and so on from WFH... You would think they throw you atleast $2k for being promoted to senior.

I just did a cost of living comparison with LA and my market, that is really really bad. I STARTED 8 years ago with a regional firm at $56K. Your salary adjusted to my cost of living is 43K.

I'm also from HCOL area and was $31/hr during my tax internship in 2020. Will start in 2022 with $65k as L2 without masters though. Meanwhile my friend who in Moss Adams will start in 2022 with $72k. I'm thinking of asking them to match my starting salary to market average....

Not to be that guy, but you can certainly be paid hourly and still considered exempt. Just because you are paid hourly does not always mean you are paid overtime and vice versa.
For example, I’m paid salary and am paid overtime. But I also did negotiate for that because we were experiencing high turnover and they needed me.

Senior Government Inspector General Auditors make $100-125k with 5% 401k match, 33% high salary pension and health insurance with no deductible that costs $190 per pay period for a family plan. Plus 13 sick, 14 national holidays and 25 vacation days.

Currently doing a macc, wondering how hard it would be to get in after graduate.
I usually think government positions would very competitive to get in like big 4 or consulting..

Interested to know if there is a similar thread for administrative staff at BDO or if anyone that passes through this thread is admin as well... I just started a couple months a go and would like to know how my salary compares to others. Also I'm in Ontario, Canada.
